2016 Region 9 tourney updates

Cudo's to NDA and St. Henry on advancing to the finals. NDA's block last night was amazing and the difference in the game. Cooper had no answer for the tips that the Panda's used to score, and after losing the first set couldn't seem to put it together on serve receive. The final game tonight should be a good one.

I don't have stats, but pretty sure Smith had a rough night. Ruppel looked like Cooper's most dangerous player vs NDA.

I don't see ND having a problem with SH tonight but the state draw was not kind for the 9th. It ends in the first round for the 9th I hate to say.

This might be common knowledge to 9th region volleyball fans, but...

Discussion over whether Cooper would beat Notre Dame Academy in the semis made me curious, so I checked:

Dating back to 2003 (as far back as I could find), and including tonight, Notre Dame and St. Henry have met in the championship game 9 of 14 years. And in all 5 of the other years, one of those two teams knocked out the other in the semifinals. In other words, Notre Dame and St. Henry are undefeated in 14 years of regional play against every team that isn't the other. That's a collective 51-0 record against the other 9th region teams in regional tournament play, or 64-13 altogether (which of course is because they're 13-13 against each other, or 14-14 after tonight).

Boom.

Absolutely great high school match tonight at Dixie between NDA and St Henry. Two teams fighting, players grinding, momentum changing runs, and so on.

NDA takes sets 1 & 2 behind solid backrow play from Region 9 Tournament MVP Jackie Noll and big offensive contributions from Natalie Hardig and Lainey Stephenson.

Then, St Henry plays inspired volleyball and wins game 3 & 4 to force a decisive game 5. Maria Tobergte sprained an ankle and missed 8-10 points in game 2 and was absolutely awesome in sets 3 & 4 to lead the comeback. Paige Noble was also hitting thunderous balls off and around the block.

NDA jumped out early in the 5th and wins 15-8. Looked like St Henry might have run out of gas.

Awesome display of volleyball and represented Region 9 and NKY well. Thanks to all the young ladies and coaches. Great show!

After the first two sets I thought NDA was gonna send us all home early, but then St. Henry took over the next two sets. Going into the fifth and final set the Crusaders had all the momentum, which one would have though would have carried over... ehhh no. NDA sprinted out to an early lead and never looked back. Highly enjoyable match, super competitive, and if they played six sets I would put money on the crusaders in the rubber match, ( that's how evenly these teams played each other).

The atmosphere of the match was what all volleyball games should be like in my opinion. The stands were packed, and the student sections on both sides were rocking the house with their back and forth. The PA announcer and music during the downtimes added to it I thought. The Staff and Parents at Dixie put on a first class event and aside from parking, I thought everything went off without a hitch this week. I was proud to be a part of it, especially when so many thought moving the venue from Ryle was a bad idea.

Any info on the all-tourney team?

Agree on the running of the venue and the work put in by parents, players and staff....nice job! However...that ceiling...way too low and disrupted or ended way too many great points. The KHSAA has field requirements for soccer (lights, size, etc) and we need the same for volleyball. I loved the location of Dixie but parking and the ceiling rule it out for future hosting in my opinion.

I also like what the 7th region does in that all teams play on Monday at one of the schools and then the semis and finals are played at one sight. NDA had to be fatigued playing three matches in three days (2 of the matches back to back tough and intense). Not sure why the final moved from Saturday (last year it was on Friday bc of Halloween) but something needs done about the schedule.
