Mason County 2016-17

Featured Replies

Basketball season for 2016/2017 should provide another exciting year. What should we expect from Mason County? Remember, please be constructive.

Mason County returns 8 seniors and 2 juniors as their top 10. 1 of the senior girls is hurt and may not be available for some time, and they lost one of their reserves from last year who transfered out of state. Their top ranked player, Whitney O'Mara has verballed to Bellarmine. They have other girls who will be able to play college ball at some level if they so choose.

2 years ago this same group made it to the semi-finals of the State Tournament. They have the talent to do it again if they play together as a team. This will be Coach Cox's second year with this bunch so hopefully he has a good feel of what they do well and what they need to work on. I know the girls have been working hard in the weight room and conditioning this off season.

Mason County has put together a very challenging schedule (including games in a prestigious South Carolina tournament, a game in New Castle, Indiana, and games against some of the top teams in the state. So it wouldn't surprise me if they lose a handful more games than they did last year, but it should make them stronger come tournament time.

In short, if they play to their potential as a team, they should have a very good shot to return to the State Tourney. But the 10th Region won't be a cakewalk and if they overlook anyone, they can be beat.

Sumo can probably add a lot more than I can. He probably has more inside info.

Mason defeated Scott Co. in their first scrimmage last night 46-41 at Harrison Co.

Mason plays Lincoln County next Saturdat at Southwestern.

Unofficially...

O'Mara - 9 (hit 2 clutch buckets at end)

Littleton - 6

McNutt - 2

Frodge - 6

Boone - 6

Moran - 7

Butler - 6

Simms - 2

Brooks - 2

Scott County won 1st half by 2 and Mason County won the 2nd half and overall. Owens girl from Scott County can really play. I think she had around 18 - 20 of their points. Scott County hit 8 threes (many of them very deep by Owens). Mason couldn't get the outside shot to fall...only 1 three out of about 10 attempts. Mason's defense stepped it up in the 2nd half and created a lot of Scott County turnovers.

Mason County beat Lincoln Co. at Southwestern 85-60 in their last scrimmage. Heard Jordan Frodge played well. Real season starts for Mason next Saturday at Dixie Heights.

Jordan was player of the game. She led all MC scorers with 20 pts. Whitney O'Mara had 15 (11 in the 2nd half). And Briana McNutt I think had 8 rebs.

Lincoln led 13 - 10 after 1st quarter. MC was sluggish after the 2.5 hr bus ride. But once they started pressuring and getting after it on the defense, MC got several run-outs and open looks. Still need to cut down on the turnovers, but they looked much better in this game than they did against Scott County.

I watched the 2nd half of the Southwestern and Male game. Very physical. Male was trailing at half by 5. Male made a run by rebounding and pressing. They got up by 6 - 7. But then Southwestern adjusted against the press and wound up winning by 8 pts. Male is VERY physical. Good thing for them girls couldn't foul out. Male is pretty big inside and will give many teams rebounding problems. They also had a girl (#5) who was knocking down lots of jump shots. Southwestern has a couple nice players (wing and center) who did a lot of scoring. They should have a good season.

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Hope to see my Mason Co. friends in a gym sometime soon! Save me some Fieldhouse popcorn!!!
