Colts Catching Up

When teams like Mayfield and Central have been able to crush schools from other classifications with a number next to their name it has made it somewhat easy to see DeSales fade from the foreground. The Colts took an early season loss to a solid 6A Ballard squad and their early season conquests over some of 6A's more "middle of the pack" squads really didn't raise eyebrows. DeSales though sure put themselves on notice Friday by handling a Top 5 ranked 5A Fern Creek squad in rather convincing fashion.

DeSales has overcame some early season bumps and bruises and just became reacquainted with the services of RB Gilly Simpson. The Colts also made a change at the QB position entrusting the reigns to Sophomore Aaron Pfaadt. The Colts are always seemingly strong on the Defensive side of the ball and this year they have not disappointed allowing right around 8 points per game with three shutouts already under their belt.

CAL and Mayfield each remain the consensus picks in 2A West, but between this DeSales win and Owensboro Catholic's early season victory over Owensboro, it is shaping up to be another gauntlet of a playoff path.

Will Everything Remain Aces for OCath?

Speaking of John Edge's Mean Green Wrecking Machine, the Aces just polished off their fourth straight win since their season opening loss by smashing crosstown foe Apollo 36-12. Superb Sophomore Vonn Williams has been the catalyst as he is already up to 843 rushing yards at the season's halfway point.

The momentum though will be needed in it's entirety this week when they travel down US 231 to Morgantown for what will be a huge District Clash with the 3-2 Butler County Bears. Followers of the Notebook already know how good Butler's versatile Rex Henderson is, but for those needing an update Henderson's stat line through 5 games reads:

Passing: 70/133, 1183 yards, 16 TD's, 3 INT's

Rushing: 62 carries, 520 yards, 9 TD's

For comparison sake Apollo defeated Butler County 33-29 the previous week. Expect this game to be one of the more anticipated match-ups to have been played at Butler County in a while.

Turning the Home of the Blue Raiders Red

When looking at this week's schedule, it is impossible not to pick out the one game that rises above all others featuring Class 2A's top ranked team. Mayfield draws the clearcut #2 ranked team in Class 3A, the Corbin Redhounds, in a neutral site game to be played at Lindsey Wilson College.

Both teams enter undefeated with a laundry list of statement wins to each of their credit. Last year the Pride of the Purchase battled for a hard fought 28-14 victory on a rain drenched night which featured neither team establish a ton of Offensive fluidity. The key aspect to watch this week will be the passing game. With Trajan Bright still sidelined with an elbow injury the Cards will need Landon Arnett to challenge a Corbin Defense that has thus far been superb in coverage. On the opposite side, the Cardinals shut down the Redhound offense through the air in 2015 as Cameron Sizemore was a paltry 2/9 for 30 yards. Corbin has improved leaps and bounds in their passing game but against the always stout Mayfield rush Defense it will be imperative to produce some big plays in the air.

LCA= Scoreboard's "Lights Can't Adjust"

Let's just establish the fact that LCA hasn't exactly played the most stout of Non-District schedules. With that in mind, you have to give credit where it is due and the LCA Offensive buzzsaw is definitely due their accolades.

LCA just put a 51 spot on Walton-Verona and have now amassed 242 points through their first five games. Ten different Eagles have found the end zone already on Offense as they continue to show great balance. Expect the stat parade to continue this week against 1A Fairview. The boys from Ashland have not exactly been the steel curtain as they enter allowing 34 points per game over their last 4 contests snd over 370 yards per game.
