It sounds like Shawnee has the heart, but not the bodies to make it respectable on the gridiron. Here is a couple of ways to make the football experience more enjoyable for the guys at Shawnee.

1. Play a non-district schedule. You would not get a chance to be in the playoffs, but you can pick and choose your opponents to be able to play on a level playing field.

2. Do a co-operative program with a nearby school like it is done in other states such as Illinois. This gives a chance for kids from schools that either do not have football or have low turnouts for the football team to play. For example, kids from UHA, which does not have a football team, but want to play football can play on the football team at Christian County under a co-op program. They will wear a Christian County jersey during a game,,but can wear the UHA logo on the jersey and can receive a football letter on their UHA letter jacket. This can work for many schools and many sports here in Kentucky.

Unfortunately the powers that be in JCPS would never allow either of these scenarios to happen. At the risk of delving into choppy waters JCPS is so committed to it's student assignment plan that it will not allow anything to happen in any of it's schools that may reflect negatively on it, including dropping or downgrading a high profile sport like football. Jefferson County has to many high schools and the student population is sparse at many schools with several huge buildings half unused. There is also an unwritten but well known hierarchy of haves and have nots within the system. Schools like Male, Manual, Ballard, Eastern etc. get facilities upgrades and are fairly well taken care of. Granted those schools have strong parental support, but that comes when the system has shown it will support parental efforts. Schools like Shawnee, Iroquois and Seneca are left to struggle.
