They do a great job at WYMT, it seems they really put a lot more focus on High school sports than any other news station. That's the way local stations should be.

Yes they do..but at the same time WYMT's coverage isn't what it once was either.

About 10-15 years ago Sports Overtime was something special. You had some big time sports broadcasting talent anchoring it and 11:20 PM until Midnight was Must Watch Television. This is not the fault of the current crew, they are doing their best and still put out a great product...but restrictions by CBS have limited them from a 40 minute show to about a 15 minute show.

I still applaud those guys though... EKY is a tiny, but widespread, market and they routinely are stretching themselves 1.5 hours beyond their station to cover teams and they make it a big deal.

I also want to give love to East Kentucky Broadcasting as well.

For years the EKB Radio Network has been top notch in their coverage of local HS football in Pike and Mingo Counties. Belfry, Pikeville, Pike Central, Shelby Valley, and Mingo Central all have their own designated station and crew every Friday and each does a very good job of covering their games in a professional manner. I would put the Belfry and Pikeville broadcasts up against most any other stream in the State. Each week they do a Pre-Game show highlighting all area games and then they do a late night recap every Friday running down scores from around the state.

In addition EKB does "The Sports Guys" each week which is a 2 hour or so show that covers UK topics but also usually devotes around a full hour to discussing HS sports.

EKB added EKBTV in recent years as well and it has been a successful endeavor. EKBTV does a nightly newscast and covers the local teams, they also do a game of the Week they air multiple times throughout the week.

To essentially cover 6 or 7 total teams they go above and beyond and do it very professionally.

They do a much longer show on Saturday night, I used to work there and those guys from August until the basketball Sweet 16 is over are putting in 70+ hour work weeks and pretty much live at the station while football and basketball overlap. It really is a shame they can't have more time for their Friday night show because they certainly put the work in. I think they would be better off just not doing any News on Friday nights and giving the entire 35 minutes to Sports OT.

I really hope EKB continues to improve the product they put out, might force WYMT into doing more with their second channel THISTV, I am not sure if their agreement is still the same but while I was there they could cover up any of the THISTV programming they wanted. They actually only added the channel because CBS stopped letting them do the Game of the Week. I would like to see them do more local programming there.

I think you may have a point to be honest

Regardless those guys rarely get the credit they deserve. Everyone likes to speak out or feel that favoritism exists because their team isn't getting the credit or coverage they want, but the truth is WYMT has spoiled people with the attention and passion they bring.
