Do any of you still coach or participate in the BGSG?

I'd like to hear a few other thoughts and opinions from BGP before I completely rant.

Yes, we are here right now. The number of teams and competition is way down from last year, guessing because partly of how they cancelled at the last minute last year, but the boys are still having fun playing games and "hotel living".

What is your rant regarding? My experience with these games is that there aren't enough good soccer players in some areas to keep up with NKY/Louisville/WKY teams and the games get ugly.

And it's darn hot often times.

My two biggest issues were that select players were playing in the recreational divisions and one referee allowed our game to become unsafe. Also I think it's a terrible idea to play soccer with no direct kicks after fouls.

What age group? In our U12 Open game yesterday our free kicks were direct after fouls... we scored on one. We had a GREAT center by the way, although he was armed with two bad AR's.

I know they have disqualified teams in the past that had kids with Select cards on Rec teams, I'm with you, that shouldn't be allowed.

We had a game tying goal disallowed because they didn't allow direct kicks in the U10 division. On a bright note, my true rec team competed at a high level against academy teams. But I just don't think that should be allowed

We had one player ripped down from behind by his hair and the punishment was an indirect kick. Also had a kid punched in the face and knocked to the ground. No call. That's just frustrating as a coach and parent

Not saying I agree, but this was on their website: All U-8 and U-10 kicks will be indirect.

At least they warned you up front. :greyalien:

Yeah it is what it is but it's also very difficult to teach true 9 year olds a new set of rules on the fly. In KYSA U10 recreational soccer, we don't play with the offside rule, cards, indirect kicks, etc. etc.

If they are going to have a rec division, I think they should follow rec rules. But, that is their rules and it's hard to complain about the rules. On the other hand, it's very easy to not participate in the BGSG again.

I agree with you that a Rec Division should use Rec rules. Without question.

I think that's really my big complaint. They advertised a rec division and our assumption was that it would be rec teams. In reality, it was academy teams who were well-versed in holding their lines and drawing players offside, etc. I played basketball in the BGSG for more than a decade and enjoyed it. This was my first time as a soccer coach. I'll know what to expect from now on.

@TheDeuce was there on Saturday too, wish we had been able to say, "hello".

Yeah, I never thought to post on here before the tournament. I've been so busy searching for my friends' bodies in my free time, that it has been difficult to do much of anything. I wish we could have met up.

That is what is confusing, I know for a fact they run every kid in KY for a select card. They disqualified a Rec champion in U12 two years ago because they found out 3 or 4 of their kids were on select teams.
