There at least use to be a rule and if it's changed it has changed in the past 10 years or so.

 

Here's the rule:

 

"Communication devices including but not limited to audio recorder, Local Area Network (LAN) phones and/or headsets, mobile phones, still photograph(s), film, analog or digital video(s) and/or Internet depictions may be used by coaches and nonplayers.”

 

Doesn't say both teams must have them. I'm not sure I remember both teams needing to have headsets in order for them to be used. Of course I can't remember any instances where teams didn't have headphones. I do remember a few times when our headphones failed but don't remember the other team being forced to stop using theirs back in the 90's. Of course that was in a different state (PA) so the rule may have been different there.

For teams that have a lot of players going both ways, I wonder how effective this would be... You don't get a lot of sideline time with those kids.
