If you didn't come to this because of the pre-game rain storm thinking they weren't going to get this one in......SHAME ON YOU, it was a dandy!!!!

Tip of the cap to Rob Coffey and the Highlands staff who got the field in EXCELLENT playing condition following the downpour. :ylsuper:

NewCath 1st - K, GO6-3, GO1-3.

Highlands 1st - PO4, K, Graybill single to right-center (WP advances to 2nd), Dutcher walks, Gabbard single to center and Schreiber's throw home is cut-off by Meyers, who then throws home, but to late (would have been DAMN close had it not been cut off). Gabbard takes 2nd on throw home, GO1-3.

NewCath 2nd - FO9, FO9, GO5-3.

Highlands 2nd - Barth bunt single (DLG 2.0 fields cleanly, but slips on the throw), FC1 (Gabbard out 1-6), Dill single to right, PO4, PO4.

NewCath 3rd - K, K, K.

Highlands 3rd - Graybill walk, Dutcher FC4 (Graybill out 4-6) (Dutcher to 2nd on WP), GO6-3, GO4-3.

NewCath 4th - Schreiber bunt single, K, Bin FC6 (Schreiber out 6-4), Meyers single to right (Bin to 3rd), FO8.

Highlands 4th - Barth single to 3rd (2.0 with a diving stop, but throw is not in time) (Barth SB to 2nd), K, PO4, (Barth to 3rd on WP), GO5-3.

NewCath 5th - DLG 2.0 down 0-2 in the count, works the count full and fouls off 3 straight pitches before launching a shot that short hops the fence in dead center for a double, K, K, Kacy Zimmerman triples to the corner in left to score Burkart, K.

Highlands 5th - GO5-3, GO6-3, PO3.

NewCath 6th - PO6, GO6-3, Meyers single to right, K.

Highlands 6th - Gabbard crushes one off the fence in right-center, but slips rounding 1st and is held to a single, (Johnson running for Gabbard) PB gets her to 2nd, WP advances her to 3rd. Daley hits one to Burkart at 3rd and she looks the runner back, but takes to long and no throw to 1st either:banghead:. NewCath has a play on and with the throw going to 2nd Johnson takes off and is gunned down at the plate (pinch runner for Daley takes 3rd on the play), Barth RBI GO3, K.

NewCath 7th - K, GO4-3, K.

The Birds/Breds rivaly got back to normal with a one run affair. More details to come...

Thanks LB for the recap. Pretty exciting game on both sides. DLG 2.0 had the Hardest hit of the night. She smoked the ball. Zimmerman did a nice job beating a pulled in left fielder and was flying around the pads on a slow track. I must say though, kudos to the city who did a nice job building that field as I would say most fields in NKY could not have taken that much water and been playable.

Hats off to Bailey Spencer. Worked out of a couple jams and was dealing. On a night where the bats just were not on the ball for the Birds, she took it on herself to earn the win. Rachel Gabbard has been in a hot streak recently and the timing couldn't be more perfect. That helps the boppers in front of her who, outside of graybills sharp single to rc were unusually quiet last night.

Lots of comments in various threads about Highlands scheduling for the post season and not a W/L record.

How much damage does district tournament play do to the bats?

Facing newport pitching then Meyers

Congrats to Rob and his gang & to NCC . 9TH is wide open the winner will have to play 3 solid games to survive

There was a hangover last night for the birds bats for sure and Meyers took advantage of it. Just a couple hard hit balls.

The second basemen (help me lawnboy) for the Breds was outstanding, couldn't get anything past her.

The regular season games in this rivalry this year were uncharacteristic.during the four years I have been around, I believe every game has been a one run affair. You can throw the records out the window.

There is no excuse. The Birds have not done a good job all year adjusting to different pitching styles. Did the Newport pitching hurt them, I don't have any idea. But the good news is from here on out they shouldn't have to go back and forth like that anymore. The pitching should be pretty consistent and outside of last night, the birds had been finding their groove at the plate. Several girls that have been hitting the last month didn't show up last night. Give credit to Meyer too. Sometimes when a pitcher hits their groove, even good hitting teams can be slowed. The Birds will be ready and if nothing else have shown their defense can win games for them.
