Bishop Brossart 3 Campbell County 1 (37th District Championship)

Featured Replies

A great pitchers duel at Scott High School in the Finals of the 37th District between the Stangs Megan Seiter and Campbell Co's Ashley Leicht. Both were dealing "goose eggs", until Brossart broke through in the top of the 5th to plate one and then get 2 more in the 6th, one on an Amanda Lloyd "moon-shot" that cleared the left field fence. Camels get one back in the 6th, but that was it.

Both teams with some stellar defense in the field, the Stangs SS Amanda Grause and 2B Ashley Childress, and Campbell's SS Danielle Orick and 3B Jessica Walsh.

Also, a heavy dose of BGP'ers in attendance. :thumb:

Great game! Congrats to the Lady Mustangs and Coach Baynum!

We always say "The regular season is practice for the post season'" That was true again tonight as the Lady 'Stangs knocked off rival Campbell County 3-1 in the 37th District Championship at Scott. Campbell had eaarlier this season ended Brossart's 10 year win streak with a 2-1 home win.

Tonight it was a great pitchers duel with Brossart's Megan Seiter outdueling her counterpart Ashley Leicht scattering 5 hits over 7 innings. Brossart bombed Scott last night 16-0 in three innings. Brossart won their 6th Straight District Championship and their 10th in the last 11 years. Their lone upset was Scott in 2010 1-0 at Scott.

Brossart jumped on top 1-0 in the top of the fifth when Riley Orth led off with a single and promptly stole second easily. Amanada Graus followed line a hard single to center and it was 1-0. The Lady 'Stangs added two more in the 6th when Amanda Lloyd drilled a Leicht pitch deep over the left field fence to make it 2-0. Ashley Childress reached on an error and Megan Seiter helped her own cause with a shot to center. Moments later her twin sister pinch hitting Maria drilled a single past the diving Danielle Orick to put her team up 3-0.

In the fifth Brossart ended a Campbell rally with a great throw with two out nailing a potential run at third. Campbell scored a run in the sixth as Orick walked was advanced to second and scored as a ball hit by Heather Terhaar skipped by third baseman Liz Martin.

That made it 3-1.

In the seventh with a runner on and two out Kenley Miller grounded to Kaitlyn Seiter who tossed to the covering Ashley Childress at first for the final out.

Brossart (17-12) and Campbell Co, (19-6) advance to the 10th region at Harrison County. In the end Brossart like the Rite of Spring is District Champs again.

Must have put the glasses down to not notice thread was already started

I heard he hit "no doubters" in his days....but back to the game.

The pitching and defense on both sides was stellar tonight. Megan Seiter and Ashley Leicht throwing beautiful games...and both getting some very nice plays in the field. Jessica Walsh and Danielle Orick on the left side of the infield making some very nice plays. Lady Stangs' Amanda Graus some how makes an unbelievable catch on a liner up the middle in the first against Miller to keep the lead off batter and speedster off the bases. Ashley Childress dives and snags a hard liner at second... and another play of the game with centerfielder Riley Orth throwing out a runner at third to end the threat in a 1-0 game.

Best of luck to both teams next week in Harrison County for 10th Region tourney.

Nice write up...

Brossart earns 6th straight district crown

Bishop Brossart broke open a scoreless pitchers' duel with a run in the fifth and added a second run on Amanda Lloyd's sixth-inning homer over the left-field fence on the way to a 3-1 win against Campbell County in Wednesday's 37th District softball tournament final at Scott.

The result avenged a 2-1 regular-season loss to the Camels, the Mustangs' first to their rivals in 11 years. It's Bishop Brossart's sixth consecutive district crown. The Mustangs (16-12) are ranked ninth in The Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches' poll. The sixth-ranked Camels (20-6) were seeking their first district title since 2005.

"Campbell County has a very nice team," Mustangs coach Tom Baynum said. "But I felt like we let one get away the first time. So I told the girls to go out and get the one that matters most."

Bishop Brossart starter and winner Megan Seiter and Campbell County's Ashley Leicht were locked in dueling shutouts in the circle until the Mustangs made a breakthrough in the top of the fifth.

Brossart's No. 9 hitter, Riley Orth, reached first on a two-out infield single when the first baseman dropped the ball while attempting to tag Orth in the base path. Orth stole second and scored on leadoff hitter Amanda Graus' single to center field.

Brossart got out of the bottom of the fifth when Orth, the center fielder, threw out the potential tying run at third base for the third out of the inning.

Lloyd led off the sixth with a 210-foot home run to left for a 2-0 Mustangs lead. She went 2-for-2, adding a double. It was her third homer of the season. "Off-speed pitch down the middle and I made good contact," Lloyd said.

Brossart pushed the lead to three later in the inning when an infield ground ball glanced off the shortstop's glove, scoring a runner from third.

"That was a relief," Megan Seiter said. "Lots of pressure off me after that."

Campbell County pulled to within two in its half of the sixth on Sarah Terhaar's run-scoring single pulled just inside the bag at third base. Megan Seiter fanned the next batter for her fourth strikeout. The next batter, representing the potential tying run at the plate, flew out to right, ending the inning.

The Camels had the tying run standing in at the plate in the bottom of the seventh following a two-out double, but Megan Seiter induced a game-ending ground ball to first, completing a five-hitter for her 17th win. The red-hot Camels had won 14 of 15 with the lone loss coming against Notre Dame Academy in the regular-season finale.

Bishop Brossart has won four games in a row and six of seven. Both teams advanced to next week's 10th Region tournament, the winner of which earns an automatic berth in the state tournament.

Bishop Brossart 000 012 0 -- 3 8 1

Campbell County 000 001 0 -- 1 5 2
