2016 US Open Cup (Soccer)

Featured Replies

The USA's version of the FA Cup continues this week as Round Two will take place across the country on Wednesday and Thursday.

Of local interest:

Louisville City FC plays host to Detroit City FC of the NPSL. Due to scheduling conflicts at Slugger, this game will take place in the friendly confines of Frazier Stadium at Bellarmine University. Small but should be a fun crowd.

FC Cincinnati will host Indiana Fire (I think) also of the NPSL. Indiana Fire reached the second round via a win over the Cincinnati Dutch Lions of the PDL.

Not quite local but I think the contest between Saint Louis FC and AFC Cleveland also has the potential to be fun, depending on how Saint Louis sets its roster.

I will be at Nippert tomorrow night with my wife for a couple's night during the week. This may be a first for us.

I think this is one of the most fun sporting events in the country. Gives the little guys a shot. Something romantic in that.

Just 16 years ago little ol' Rochester Rhinos won the whole thing (although admittedly MLS wasn't then the dominant force in American soccer it is now). Charleston Battery made the semifinals that same year when they were both in the old A-League before the USL formed.

Charleston Battery made the final in 2009 before falling to an MLS squad.

But it's been a little bit since the lower leagues had a truly deep run as the 2011 Richmond Kickers were the last non-MLS team to make the semifinals.

Welp. I can breathe again.

Louisville City FC 1:1 Detroit City FC

Louisville advances 3-1 after shootout.

Detroit parked the bus. They flopped. They dove. The ran their mouths and were genuinely awful to behold.

And it almost worked.

0-0 after regulation, Detroit went ahead just minutes into the extra time period on a free kick following a really suspect foul call.

Louisville tied it up early in the second overtime period.

Managed to hit the penalty shots and advanced by the skin of our teeth. Play at Indy Eleven of the NASL in two weeks.

FC Cincy wins 2-1 in a game they absolutely dominated. Harkes' side play Total Football, and their movement kept pulling Indy's defenders out of position for longer angled runs in behind the CBs. Playing with mostly his B squad, the team overwhelmed Indy, repeatedly getting 1-on-1s in the box with the goalie, only to squander their chances. The breakthrough came in the 25th (going from memory) when Indy's RB handled a cross in the box. Omar Cummings drove home the penalty for a 1-0 FCC lead. Indy tied it at the 41st minute. The 2nd half saw Indy take control for the first 10 minutes, but on came growing local legend Jimmy McLaughlin. He is turning into their lynchpin starting out on the left in their 4-3-3 and switching positions with everyone but the goalie. He hammered home a rebound from a Cummings shot and gave FCC the 2-1 score that they would see through.

For those interested, it was a really, really nice sized crowd for a Wed night Open Cup game.

A few upsets by lower-division teams over professional sides last night.

The Villages SC (PDL) beat the Charleston Battery (USL) in penalties after a 2-2 draw. And yeah, they do actually play at The Villages community in Florida. Their home field was built as a polo ground.

Lansdowne Bhoys FC (USASA) got a 2-0 win over the Pittsburgh Riverhounds (USL).

Des Moines Menace (PDL) also booked a place in the third round with a 2-0 victory over Tulsa Roughnecks FC (USL).

Host sites annouced for Round Four. Almost hoping Louisville loses in the third so I don't have to suffer through this. Just unreal.

Ok. I've calmed down a bit from the announcement. So, Third and potential Fourth Round matchups:

Tampa Bay Rowdies (NASL) host FC Cincinnati (USL). Winner will travel to play Columbus Crew (MLS).

Indy Eleven (NASL) host Louisville City FC (USL). If Louisville City wins, then they will play the Chicago Fire (MLS) at the Bell Soccer Complex on the campus of the University of Kentucky in Lexington (ugh). If Indy Eleven win, then they'll travel to play the Fire in Bridgeview, Illinois.

The puzzling thing is if FCC wins they will play The Crew in Columbus, at Jesse Owens Stadium. Capacity, 10k.

Why wouldn't they play at Crew Stadium?

The Villages has been disqualified, Charleston is back in.

I saw that. Crazy. Second team in as many rounds DQ'd for playing ineligible players.

I'm confused. FCC just played Indy 11

Never mind. They played the weaker side. PDSL league or whatever.
