Because Fulton City doesn't want to merge. Fulton County would have control over it.

What are the enrollments now - about 100 and 150? How much could there be to control?

It seems like a huge waste to have two schools in such a small county, and it's not like there is a record of great academic or athletic success of late.

Enough for it to matter to them. They also don't want to lose their identity as a city. If the school left there would be nothing left. It would make the town even smaller.

Monticello still has a school in the city. I think there are several schools in Monticello. There's a difference if you have no school in the city.

We've had that discussion in Harlan County. Evarts is still Evarts and Cumberland is still Cumberland eight years after the high schools closed.

It's kind of a chicken and egg debate, I guess, but if you're town is so small that it only has 90 kids in high school then there isn't much left to save, and keeping a school open that has only a handful of teachers and classes probably isn't helping.

That would depend on the new district. Not always the case. County school may decide that they only need one elementary, one middle, and one high.

 

I guess since I'm from a town with 100 kids in the high school I could see the point in a school being around. By closing a school, you usually end up dealing with a large empty building in the town. I guess it depends on what side you are on.

Any news on this? I couldn't find any information on the job listing on the Fulton City Schools or KHSAA websites.
