Dog Meds Advice

Featured Replies

Has anyone had a dog on Proin? My dog was put on it a couple of months ago, by my vet. In googling it to try to find a place to buy it online, I read some reviews that were a bit scary.

@doomer?

I know it is for bladder incontinence. My daughter teaches veterinary medicine at Kansas State U. I will ask her about it...anything specific you need to know?

Animal meds. are like human meds. sometime a person or animal will have an adverse reaction to a medication....that's why commercials have so many disclaimers.

As stated above, it is primarily used for urinary incontinence. If you have an older spayed female dog and is incontinent and the proin is not helping, ask about diethylstilbesterol (DES).

Quote below from mini-doomette DVM

"I don't have any worries, though typically I do routine blood work before starting them on the medication to make sure there are no liver issues. I have used it before and never had any issues. "

Thanks, everyone, for the advice and information. Yes, my dog is a spayed female and it is for urinary incontinence.

What I read is that Proin is the same drug that used to be marketed for dieting for humans, known as Dexatrim. It was taken off the market for causing strokes. Some are saying that their dogs died of stroke after being on Proin.

@doomer, can you ask mini-doomerette DVM, if she has heard about this at all? Also, my vet did not do any bloodwork prior to putting her on the meds. Should I request that be done? Lastly, someone recommended this natural supplement instead. Does she have any insight on this? Botanical Dog - Botanical Cat: PET NATURALS Bladder Support for Dogs-45 or 9

Any time.....your question is in process (and will be answered in the order in which it was received ...no. 1!!).

I spoke with my daughter. She has had many patients defer on the blood work but she has never seen a problem. Since it is processed by the liver, she is always cautious. The natural bladder support could help overall bladder health, but she is concerned it wouldn't solve the specific issue of incontinence. Hope this is helpful.
