Thomas More 92 Guilford 40

Featured Replies

The top-ranked Thomas More College women's basketball team defeated Guilford College, 92-40, tonight (Saturday, March 5, 2016) in a second round game of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.

The Saints improve to 29-0 and advance to the semifinals of the section round "Sweet 16" of the tournament. They will play Maryville College on Friday (March 11) at a location to be announced Sunday afternoon. When the location is released, it will be posted on the College's athletic website (Thomas More College Athletics). With the loss, the Quakers end the season at 22-6.

Thomas More led 28-10 after one quarter, 49-18 at halftime and 74-30 after three quarters before cruising to the 92-40 victory. The Saints had a 46-18 advantage in points in the paint, 30-10 off turnovers, 15-2 in second chance points and 21-6 on fast break points. Thomas More forced 24 Quaker turnovers.

Senior guard/forward Sydney Moss (St. Albans, W.Va./Boone County (Ky.)) led all scorers with 26 points. She was joined in double-figure scoring by sophomore guard Abby Owings (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) with 16 points and sophomore forward Nikki Kiernan (Cold Springs, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) with 14 points. Moss led the team on the boards with nine rebounds and in assists with eight. Kiernan led the team in blocks with four, while Moss and senior guard Olivia Huber (Woodlawn, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) led the team in steals with three each.

They are fun to watch - Moss is a great player and it's clear she really enjoys playing with her teammates. Owings can really play, too.

Mark Story had a really nice article in the Herald-Leader this week about the team. I had no idea they had had so much success.
