Monroe County High School Coach John Petett steps down

Featured Replies

Coach John Petett tender is resignation today as head football coach. He was promoted to head coach in 2004. During his time he has brought recognition to the Falcons. He won 3 regional championships and was very very good coach and motivator.

I wish him the best of luck in his next endeavor. He will be missed as the coach of the Falcons.

He is a great coach. Had some wars with Wayne County. Any idea what he plans on doing?

"Below is a letter announcing the resignation of Coach John Petett. Former and present players & Falcon fans please feel free to comment with your well wishes and a favorite memory of him and Falcon Football!

To: Monroe County Board Of Education

I have been coaching football in Monroe County for 21 years; I started as an assistant coach at MCMS in 1995. In 1996 I was asked to be an assistant coach at MCHS under Fred Harbison. I coached under Fred Harbison for 4 years and I am forever grateful to him for giving me the opportunity to coach at MCHS. I feel as if he opened the door for me and motivated me to get my degree and continue coaching at the place I love. John Myers (now head coach at Russellville High School) became the head coach at Monroe County High School in 2000. We immediately became very good friends and colleagues and I learned an abundance of football knowledge from Coach Myers. During his stay at Monroe I was defensive coordinator for 4 years and we amassed a 28-18 record at MCHS. Coach Myers decided to leave at the conclusion of the 2003 season and then another chapter of my football career was set to begin at MCHS.

I was hired as head coach in 2004, where I currently hold the position as Head Coach. The past 12 years have been some of the greatest times in my life. The passion this community has for football is beyond greatness. The support that I have had from all my colleagues, board members, and superintendents has been at the highest level. I have truly been blessed with the greatest fan base any coach could ask for and also the most supportive and caring parents in the football world. Being able to coach a sport that a lot of people would say helps mold young men into great leaders has been a great opportunity for me. I have had so many great moments while being the head coach at MCHS since 2004 that I couldn’t even begin to mention them all. Great moments are not measured in win and losses or the trophies in the case, they are measured on how someone made you work hard, or smile, or laugh, they are measured on your passion for the game and all the unique players that you came in contact with. The student/athletes that I have had the opportunity to coach have helped shape and mold not only my life but my 14 and 10 year old sons as well. I am forever grateful to be just a small part of their life and I hope they are better men for having played football at Monroe County High School.

I have had the luxury of coaching football in a school system that has had tremendous leadership. I will never forget the support I received from Mr. George Wilson, Mr. Lewis D. Carter and Mrs. Amy Thompson who are proven leaders and true professionals. During my tenure as head coach at MCHS I have had the privilege of working for two principals who understand the importance of what sports can do for school culture. Phil Bartley and Max Petett have been the most supportive and influential people that I know. Last I would like to thank all my family for their support during these 21 years. There is nothing any worse than a ornery ole ball coach after a loss and my family has been very supportive of me through my endeavors. Since 2004 I have had the opportunity to become the winningest coach in MCHS football history and also have been on the winning side of 3 regional championships. This is a tribute to the players I have coached and the assistant coaches for whom I have coached with. I feel as if I have the best staff in the state of Kentucky and they continue to learn and work hard each and every day to see our student/athletes succeed. I have truly been blessed with coaches who were supportive to not only me but the program through the good times and the bad. I feel as if our football program from little league, middle school and high school is in the best shape it has ever been in during the history of the program. The coaches at each level possess a passion that is unbelievable and second to none.

With all this being said, I feel as if it is time for me to step away from Monroe County Football and turn the reigns over to a new coach who will bring fresh ideas and a high level of energy to the program. There comes a time when one feels that everything has come full circle and that you as an individual have given everything you have to give. I just feel it is the right time for me to enjoy watching my sons play as a father and enjoy them, rather than watching them as a head coach and critiquing them. I would still love to be part of MCHS athletics and continue to do whatever is needed of me to do to help keep our athletics competing at the highest level. Effective January 4th, 2016, I officially resign my position as head football coach. I would like to personally thank everybody in which I have came in contact with in the last 21 years coaching football at MCHS. It has been one great ride and I have been blessed to have had this wonderful opportunity, THANKS TO EVERYONE.

Respectfully Yours

John Petett"

Just posted copy of letter from fans of Monroe county football.

Doesn't say much about his future plans at this time.

Hate to hear this but can't fault the guy when he goes out with a lot of class and wants to focus on his family

Never met the man, but he seems like a class act.

Congrats to Coach Petett on his great career and best of luck to he and his family future.

Monroe is a good job I think, but they play a heck of a schedule and are in a very tough region.

You want expectations, but they also have to be realistic ones at that.

John's a great guy, wish him nothing but the best!
