"Ye Shall Take Up Serpents " - Would You Handle Poisonous Snakes to Please Your God?

Featured Replies

Mark 16:18King James Version (KJV)

18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

I've witnessed it from afar- as far back as I can get. It's pretty disturbing. The most disturbing part for me is when children are brought to these kind of services.

Is this from a gift from God or , like other religious rituals , just another bizarre manifestation of man's doing? "Faith" indeed leads to some strange beliefs and actions. Maybe why I cringe when someone says, "Just have faith."

Everybody's heard of Jolo(WV) . Hell, I bet Bo knows Jolo ! They love their serpents in Jolo. When's the bus leave for Jolo? Notice the trance-like state and the glazed eyes.

To each his own but I've never understood why people do these rituals in church.

I'm not an authority on the Bible but years ago a friend, who read his Bible and regularly attend church, told me that the churches that do this were misinterpreting the Scriptures, that the verses that refer to this were not intended for the everyday Joe and Jane. They were meant for Jesus' disciples so they could go forth and spread the word. He said that was most churches interpretation, except for a small amount of churches in Appalachia.

That's the problem with Scripture. It's all left to interpretation. Who's to say one group is interpreting it right and another is wrong? ISIS thinks it's interpreting scripture correctly. Baptists think they are. I think I am correct in saying its all a farce. Religion clearly sucks and leads many to think you can blow yourself up and instantly be in bed with virgins or that you can gun down an abortion doctor and you'll receive your just rewards in heaven for doing so. Count me as pretty down on religion. How many wars have been fought because of religious ideology? Be one with the Universe all you want to, people, but trash the man-made religiosity.

That's what our religious studies professor also said back in the day.

Just because a war was fought in the "name of ideology", it doesn't mean the people actually practiced it.
