BELFRY — Phillip Haywood’s Belfry Pirates entered Friday’s Class 3A State Semifinal against Corbin as heavy favorites, and it didn’t take them long to show why many believe they’ll capture their third straight state title next week.

The Redhounds had no answer to the Pirates’ monster running attack, as Belfry scored on its first six possessions and never looked back during its 42-14 rout of Corbin. Belfry outgained the Redhounds, 420 to 287 in total yardage.

The win advances the Pirates (13-1) to their sixth straight appearance in the state title game, while improving their post-season win streak to 14 games, and regular season win streak to eight games. On the flip side, the Redhounds finish the season with a 9-5 record, while dropping their fourth straight state semi-final contest. The last time Corbin won a state semi-final game was under former coach Steve Jewell back in 2002.
