Holy Cross 2 Newport Central Catholic 0

Congrats, Holy Cross!

Nice win Holy Cross, you must have NCC's number, HC beat NCC twice in past 2 weeks. Still can't figure out why they played each other twice in regular season.

Unlikely, but these two could meet again in the 9th Regional Tournament.

Imagine some on NCC must be thinking club soccer can't get here soon enough.

Imagine some on NCC must be thinking club soccer can't get here soon enough.

Why would you say that?

Was a very hard fought game by both teams, with a lot of calls in this game. First half I would say possession was about 50/50. Both teams had a few opportunities but could not capitalize. I thought defense for both teams played well in the first half keeping the score zero to zero at half time.

Second half Both teams came out with some fire. playing hard and physical. unfortunately NCC was on the sour end of a lot of these calls. HC keeper made a great save off of a header to keep the score zero zero and give HC the boost they needed to push on the offensive attack. Nate Doggit was hit pretty hard in the box giving HC a PK where Doggit put it away giving HC the 1-0 Lead. the game was pretty much back and forth until about 14 minutes left when HC went into defensive mode. NCC had some opportunities but not too many on frame. About 5 minutes left HC keeper made another great save keeping HC in the lead. With 36 second left HC made a clear and their freshman #35 made a run on and played the ball around NCC defender. Giving him a one on one with the keeper. A very questionable call of a foul from behind in the box gave hc another PK as well as a red card to NCC defender. From the talk some say it was a good call and some say it was a horrible call. From my angle it looked like a foul, however others say differently. the freshman then put away the PK giving HC the 2-0 lead and game finisher.

I think both teams played well and hard. Neither team gave up the entire match. As I said there was a lot of calls some good some bad but NCC was on the bad end of that. But I also feel they were not expecting HC to play as tough as they did. I see HC stepping up hard and not playing timid as they have in the past. I have not seen NCC play this year until tonight but from what I have read on here I was expecting a lot better controlled and conditioned team. Congrats to HC and good luck NCC.

Was the red for the severity of foul or for a goal scoring opportunity?

Goal Scoring Opportunity

Ah, well that happens. It's becoming more recognized in the game.

I had the pleasure to watch this game as well. Even ran into HC alum and former Ncc coach McDonald, couldn't tell who he was rooting for.

I thought that the Indians played harder than the Breds and that's why they won. There really was not much possession from either side, a lot of kick and run. I think #9 and 10 stood out for Ncc and Linstead and Doggit were the better Hc players. I'm not sure the last time Ncc lost to Hc was but it happened twice this year, are the tides turning? Is HC that good or was all that talk about Ncc just hype?

Great win for the Indians

Ncc better get it together

One more question, how many games does that make Ncc back sit out?

Why would you say that?

I've been around the game a long time, almost without exception, each season about this time of the year I hear players say, " I can't wait until club soccer starts back up."

A whole host of different reasons why they say this;

HS is a long season, 5-6 days a week, big time commitment, looking for a break.

Lack of equally skilled teammates on HS team.

Lack of equally skilled competition, lack of good competition.

HS team is not competitive against top HS teams.

Lack of quality training sessions.

Selfish play/direct style of play in HS game.

Playing out of their normal position, the position they feel most suited for.

To name a few of the reasons I have heard from players over the years.

^ No, I meant why would you say that specifically in reference to NCC? Or are you listing the reasons above in specific reference to NCC? Just curious, because it sounds from others' description of the game like it was a well fought match on both sides. And I know NCC always gets up for the post-season, which is right around the corner. So do you have some specific insight about NCC or was that just kind of a poking at NCC? It's OK if you were just poking at NCC. You don't have to back off or hand waive it away. Happens on here all the time.

Unfortunately, this red might prove really costly for NCC.

The length of suspension has not been determined yet but assuming a 2 game minimum is applied, they would be without him for Districts and their first Regional match.

Not poking fun at NCC, and have not heard directly from any NCC players. IMO NCC (up to this point) has underachieved while playing what most would say is a rather weak schedule compared to a typical NCC season. Under these circumstances I suspect there are NCC players (as well as players from many other HSs in similar situations) looking forward to their upcoming club seasons.

And I post this after NCC lost to HC twice in 2 weeks. Another reason (taking a loss, twice, to a team you think you should beat) that causes players to say, "club soccer can't get here soon enough."

You left out going to Disney.... I know some who can't wait to get to Disney.

In all seriousness, I think some of it is also because of the friendships some of the Club players have forged. Playing for your school is great, don't get me wrong, it has benefits as well. I see these boys together 4-5 times a week and also spending several weekends together for a large portion of the year.... I think some of it goes beyond the soccer.
