October 15, 201510 yr This new found divisiveness is by design and is working just as planned. Divide and conquer is much easier than conquer and divide. Agreed.. One of Alinsky's basic rules..
October 15, 201510 yr Anyone who reads period publications from our history, and diaries of those who lived in them, will find that we haven't changed all that much, especially in our inability to be civil to one-another. Amen, the news papers and political cartoons back then were particularly vicious. We just think it is so rough now because there was this odd period in the 20th century where we were uncharacteristically civil to each other. This was likely largely due to the fact that from the 50s through the late 90s we had a huge number of WWII vets in congress. They knew, no matter their differences, that they had to work together. That is why there was such a level of cooperation across the parties, it changed with the newer generations.

I think it's totally fair to say that the current group of congressmen that took the WWII-era guys' place are largely a group that shunned military service in their formative years, and that has added to the shrill, disrespectful, uncompromising tones coming from all sides.
