Corbin Basketball

How is Corbin looking this summer? Who are next years projected starters?

Will Corbin start 1 or 2 freshmen, if so this may be the youngest district in the state.

Hard to say who would be the starters right now. I think Coach Pietrowski uses the summer the build depth and is not overly concerned with wins and losses. He usually tries to play alot of kids and search for strengths and weaknesses which can be improved when practice begins in late fall.

Right now about 10 kids are in the mix for varsity time. Josh Crawford, Josh Hamlin, Deke Barley, Josh Smith, Aaron Manns, Madison Johnson, Issac Wilson, Devin Rogers, Clayton Sewell and Lee Crawford would appear to be the front runners for the varsity squad. Several players are involved with summer baseball and football like Clint Cashen and will be joining the team once the season begins.

How is Whitley doing? I know Kris Craig and Greg Bargo are now playing with the Colonels.

Will Bargo or Craig have any eligibilty problems after transferring from Corbin to Whitley Co?

I doubt it. Neither played any varsity basketball and Corbin rarely protests any transfers. Bargo has been at North Laurel, Madison Southern, Corbin and now Whitley so it appears he enjoys moving around often. Hopefully he will settle in and stay put for the remainder of his playing days.

Are both Bargo and Craig sophmores to be? The Bargo kid looks like he is probably 6-5, is he young enough to continue growing? Both of these kids have some athletic ability but, truthfully unless they made some quick improvement, I cannot see either of them playing much at Corbin. The Corbin 9th and 10th grades are simply loaded. I think there is a very good chance that Corbin starts two freshman and two sophmores this season.

Yes both will be sophomores.

Craig's dad is about 6'6 so he may get bigger, he may have some room for the noggen to grow.

Bargo's dad is about 6'7 and was a wrestler and played some semi pro baseball. Owned the Colleseum club in Bville, and is now a chiropractor.

Bargo is about 6'3 and Craig is about 6'2 unless they have hit a massive growth spurt.

Sounds like coach Deaton is bringing new players in right and left. Where does that leave the returning players that took the lickings last year.

More than likely on the bench or in the stands...besides why do you want to keep them. I mean look what they did?!?!?!??!!

Last season most of the Whiitley people were insisting that they were just young and needed more time to get better and mature. Now they are willing to throw them away for some Corbin rejects. Guess they will never get their chances to prove people wrong. Maybe you are correct the kids that represented Whitley last season may not be good enough, but they have earned some respect in my book. I have been on teams that were not so successful and feel like it made me a better person. If transfers are the anwser to equation then go at it full force. I for one think the Native Whitley Kids are good enough to pull the Colonels back to competitiveness. But what do I know.

More than likey you know more than me about basketball at Whitley, all I know is what I saw last year when they played us in Barbourville, I was just alluding to the fact that they were not very skilled. They could get better under Coach Deaton and then be in a position to help.

I probably do know more about the powers to be at Whitley than most. Apex are you a Whitley, Wburg , or Knox fan? You seem to be interested in alot of Whitley things to be a Knox Co boy? I know you were interested in the Wburg basketball hire as well. Guess you are like myself and have diverse tastes and interests. :scared:

whats the deal with Bargo heard he left Madison Southern or Central whichever the day before the opening game? Sounds kinda funny but would be even fishier if he was a real good player.

True. Makes you wonder if he is not a victim of the over bearing parent who thinks the kid is the next Michael Jordan. I hope he finds peace at Whitley County. Lord knows he is due some .

I find it odd that a Corbin fan is wondering how transfers will affect the Native Whitley kids.

I'd respond with two statements.

1) Transfers are a part of the game, happens all the time at all schools. I don't think 2 kids coming in will have an impact on anybody's feelings.

2) If there is an impact, Corbin should have insight. Because they've had more Basketball transfers in the past decade than anybody in the area.

Bargo went to Corbin through the 6th grade, the family moved to Tn when he was in the 7th, moved back to the area and attended N. Laurel and started on their 8th grade team. He then was at Madison the beginning of his freshman year before coming back to Corbin at the beginning of basketball season.

Bargo's dad told me during the district basketball tournament that Greg was 6'4" and the dr.'s were telling him that he should grow 2-3 more inches. He is a very agressive player with good quickness for his size, but he was probably a year away(not soon enough I guess) from being a big contributor for Corbin. The Redhounds have a hole to fill in the post this year and with French and Campbell apparently not going to play, Bargo would have been competing with the freshman Manns for playing time. Manns is a better offensive player, but Bargo could have contributed with rebounding and post defense if he would have stuck around.

Craig is just stuck behind a whole lot of good wing players and could not see a light at the end of the tunnel. He has a chance to be a pretty good player by his junior or senior year.

I say good luck to the kids whereever they choose to play.

I'm for kids getting a chance to compete and have fun, whether it's for or against my team - that's fine. I rather lose a player to transfer so that he can get some PT, than the same player stay on my team have a limited role and be unhappy. You only get to be in HS once so why not make the most of it.
