By all means let's follow the everyone gets a trophy mentality even though everyone wants an asterisks added to the record to show they may have brought down varsity players.

 

How does my statement imply that? The boys enjoy it... that's what it is about. There are very little facts people have to support their claims. A lot of speculation is made. It may happen due to a number of causes (just or not). Every year someone has an excuse... which are the same excuses provided during regular season play. Field was awful, refs were awful, they dropped a varsity player. In the end, the boys should (and do) take the challenge and have fun doing that.

 

It does get annoying every year we hear the same thing so I agree, but this tournament and the Freshman one is unique to NKY. The coaching association enjoys putting it together and the boys enjoy it too.

I have no knowledge of the workings of Brossart's involvement in last year's JV tournament, but someone who does fired me the following comment to be posted here, since I seem to be the Brossart spokesman.

 

"This is total (Word Filter)…..we did not bring varsity players down because our varsity was playing a district game against Campbell County that weekend. Teams like Covcath, Highlands, NewCath and Campbell did in fact bring down players and it was confirmed. Brossart did not. With less than 2 minutes to play, Justin Rolf and Justin Schultz, who played both JV and varsity last year, came to the JV Final game and got in to the game. This needs to be clarified.

 

Would love to hear who the CCH players were because, to my knowledge, it did not happen......keep in mind, that because of the size of last years junior class, CCH did have Juniors on the JV team (only), there was no group that played both, so it may have seemed like players were brought down, since Juniors were on the field.

As relayed by Mustang Brossart as everyone knows is a small school with a total attendance somewhere around 260 kids ( boy and girls ) and some kids have to play on multiple teams. I can assure you that there were no varsity starters on those fields that weekend. There were 4 boys that were subs for varsity that were there.

If my memory serves me right it was 4 freshmen 4 sophomores 5 juniors on that jv team. And until 2 of the junior subs came from the other game in the last 5 min we had one sub and they held a very talented cov cath team to 1 goal.

So if your son lost to a undermanned jv team I am sorry! Maybe they should work harder instead of accusing others of cheating.

Unfortunately, there are a few schools that do not have an overabundance of players in their boys or girls programs. With these schools, you sometimes have kids that will play at all 3 levels (F, JV & V).

1711 If your comment is directed at me......I have no dog in the JV tournament fight nor have I in the past.....my stance has been consistent over the past 8 years on this subject........

......so you did have at least 2 players that played a significant role on V and came for the last 5 minutes of the JV game........seems wrong......

 

My comments to this point weren't directed at calling out any one team.....I don't know who does and who doesn't bring them down. Some teams have the luxury of numbers, others don't........but Varsity players are varsity players and this isn't a Varsity tournament......Need numbers? Call up Frosh.....

And that is my point. I had the misfortune to attend the final last year and it was a sad affair of trash talking and bad attitude. The tournament fosters bad feelings as it is now. I agree we need to continue having it but some changes need to be made and enforced.

I hear what you're saying, but everyone says it every year without offering up "how". How are you going to monitor and therefore enforce it? If that can be figured out and it's feasible... bring it up to the varsity head coach to bring up at one of their meetings.

The KHSAA website requires the teams to report the stats......part of the stats are players that played in the V games and it tracks how many games over the season....

 

Apply the eligibility to this..........if they play in over 20 % (or insert your own parameter here) they become ineligible for the JV tournament.....if a team doesn't report stats, then they aren't eligible.....two problems solved...

Not bad if KHSAA would actually support the ability to do such. I do disagree with your parameter around playing time only. A player should be allowed if you have a Varsity player that comes off the bench every game for 20 minutes (assuming they're not a Senior of course), but are a normal starter for the JV team. I think we need to distinguish between the starters is all. If you're a normal Varsity starter for xx% then you shouldn't be allowed. The KHSAA doesn't track starters though.

The tournaments should be for the kids who regularly play on the team. If they happen to also get minutes on JV or Varsity that is fine. For some schools this is an absolute necessity, for others it makes sense whether driven by numbers, injuries, rewarding a player with a call-up, or looking at a player who might contribute post-season. I doubt any coaches would try to game game the system, but if bright line rules are needed, I would suggest as follows:

 

JV Regionals... must play at least as many JV games as Varsity games; and must not play in more than 50% of the Varsity games played before JV Regionals.

 

Freshmen... must be a regular member of the freshman team. Note: If freshmen could be brought down from JV solely for the freshmen tournament, then CCH could have brought 5 freshmen down (they didn't) and Highlands could have brought 9 freshmen down (they didn't).

Last year Brossart brought varsity players down, NCC has been known to do so for this tournament, not sure how else. IMO it is an embarrassment and shows a lack of respect to the JV players, sends a "you're not good enough" message to the JV players. Bringing varsity players "down" says it all. Who wants to be brought "down", a good coach, a good program coaches their players up not down.

You really need to get off of your high horse blasting programs that do not have CovCath in their name. I know for a fact that NCC has NOT brought a Varsity player down for the JV regional in the 8 years that I have been associated. We did however, bring JV players up to play the Varsity regional that year we beat the overrated Colonels I think HHS did the same the year they beat the overrated Colonels. Coaching our players up and letting their game do the talking. You should consider changing your screen name to GameTalkedRight.

There were only 4 freshmen in the soccer program last year and they all played jv along with the 4 sophomores the rest were juniors . Sorry we only had 23 boys in the entire soccer program last year. And only 30 this year but still manage to have a successful season. May I ask why the final was a sad affair?

From what I saw in the game there was a lot of cheap off play antics and trash talk. At least twice the AR had to step in on players doing extracurricular activities while the ref was dealing with something else. Could this have been just these two teams, maybe. But I have been in years past to other games and it always seem like people are very high strung and not just from excitement.
