40 Home Runs At Age 22

Featured Replies

Bryce Harper , age 22, hit his 40th home run last night.

22! Love watching this guy play.

He is the 6th player in MLB history to hit 40 while 22 or younger.

Name the other 6.

He's no Barry Bonds, but he's off to a great start.

Bonds is one of the greatest hitters of all time.

By comparison , Bonds didn't hit 40 until he was 28 years old.

Clyde has a serious man crush on Harper. :lol2:

Alex Rodriquez

Ken Griffey Jr.

DiMaggio

That's all I got.

Joe D and ARod are correct.

Between him and Trout....

In terms of the better player, Trout and it isn't even close IMO...

Strawberry

Brady Anderson?

I'll disagree with "isn't even close" but I'll give Trout the edge without question.

The young talent in MLB is going to be fun to watch.

Strawberry

Brady Anderson?

No. Anderson was still in the minors at age 22.

Mel Ott is #3 . Figured I'd throw that out since no one was going to guess him.

Clues:

One guy did it twice by age 22 in the 50s.

One guy in the early 70s.

One guy in the early 90s.

The young talent in MLB is going to be fun to watch.

No doubt. And it's not just these two either.

The forgotten guy is Stanton down in Miami. Dude is 25 years old (just turned 25 in August), and has 181 career HRs already. If it weren't for missing over a season's worth of games already in his career he'd be closing in on 250 HRs already. That's absurd.

I looked at a bunch of video of Harper's swing this year and in previous years.

Before this year he really dove to the ball and got into his front side hard and early, then swung from an elevated hand position which gave him a steep swing angle.

He had major timing issues and when you see guys swinging with all their energy coming from momentum and arms, they're going to be very streaky hitters. And he was before this year. He'd go on tears then he'd fall off for weeks at at time.

The timing issue was his biggest problem.

I'm not sure how he figured it out but he has improved his lower body and linked it better to the upper body. He still uses his arms too much but his swing plane is better.

Controlling the move out with his rear leg/hip and resisting with his back has taken away much of the timing issue he's dealt with in the past.

He's still too 'army' because he gives up the link/stretch too early. What that means is though he's improved his swing quite a bit, there is still room for him to get even better.

Pretty scary.
