Anyone know the rule? If team is awarded a free kick - team try's to take the kick quick and doesn't ask for 10 yards- defender right front of the ball stops the ball on the kick by deflecting- is this legal for defender? Can the defender be that close and play the ball on the kick?

My understanding was that once the attacking team attempts to take a quick kick, that team has lost the right to re-take the kick, even if it strikes a defender that's only a few yards away. Attacking team can either play quickly to maintain advantage or slowly to ensure the protection of the 10-yard barrier.

Basically correct. The attacking team takes a quick kick but has to assume the risk of what they see. If they take a kick and the defender is close they knowingly do so. In the ussf classes they said the defender can go sideways or back to get the ball but not forward. They showed a really good video that made it make a lot of sense a few years ago but I don't know how to get it.

Correct. If the defender comes forward to play the ball, I believe they will be given a yellow card if contact is within 10 yards from where the kick was taken.

If defender jumps and makes contact they don't get a yellow- that is if offense isn't asking for 10 yards- just playing ball? I didn't know rule - official rule.

If a defender purposely approaches the ball after the foul has been called it's a yellow. If they are right by the ball when the foul occurs, they don't have to move out of the way though. It's only when a player blatantly approaches the ball to block it.

To a point yes. Even if they approach and the kicking team kicks the ball into them after the defender "sets" themselves then that is on the kicker. The attackers can't force the card here.

Usually ignored unless the player had been cautioned before......subjective and depends on situation

I would like to see the ref's start carding for the intentional delay of game by players kicking the ball away after a foul is called. You might let them get away with it once per team but should be carded after that for delay. From what I've witnessed, the CR calls the foul and then turns their back to the play then the ball gets kicked away by the guilty team. Should the AR's signal for the delay?

No card. You don't get anything from giving the card.

 

This is by far the most common sense heavy card in the game. Team that is down 8-0 kicks a ball away, card? No way unless it is in dissent. Player kicks a ball as the whistle is blowing, card? No. You have to be there.

I asked as ref at Walton and Calvary game Monday gave card to defender who was set when offense put ball down and kicked - kid jumped and stuck foot out and hit the ball- ref gave him card - I thought it was ok to stand ground unless they ask- they didn't and card was given- really surprised me. I didn't think the ref really knew the rule. I didn't fully get clear picture until now- thanks.
