Those kiosks are all over Europe now, but I really didn't notice fewer employees.

Usually when I go to a McDonald's around here, the cashier just doesn't work the cash register, they have other duties too. With the kiosks they can focus on their other duties. Plus, the ones I went to in Europe this summer, after you order you sit down and they deliver the food to your table. Plus, it also helps prevents theft of money by employees, as only the managers can open the kiosk to collect the cash.

You can blame the higher minimum wage all you want, and while I disagree with it myself, automation of jobs has been an ongoing process for a long time. Payroll is a company's biggest expense, and a company's main goal is to make money, not create jobs. Sure a $15 minimum wage may have accelerated this new program by McDonald's, but you can bet this has been in the works for a while. Remember grocery stores, gas stations, banks, and other big box stores have been doing forms of self checkout for years. McDonald's isn't about great customer service, or great food, it's about getting food quickly, and these kiosks are right inline with that.
