"Boys only" little colonel league

Featured Replies

I recently emailed the director of the little colonel basketball league asking if I could put my all girls 3rd grade team in their u9 division. I explained, we are not an aau team but we can compete with boys of the same age. We are just looking for a place other than sports of all sorts to play.

Of course the answer is ...No...boys Only

Now, I know I'm going to get the old...is it fair for an all boys team to play in a girl's league? No, of course not! We are just limited in options of places to play in nky. And there are more options for boys basketball leagues at this age level.

Does anyone else this this is ridiculous?

While I can see why you are frustrated with lack of options for your team, I kind of see their point. If they let your team in then they have to open it up to other girls teams and evidently they don't want a co-ed league. If a boys team beats a girls team they feel like, big deal we beat a girls team and if they get beaten by a girls team it's really humiliating, so it's lose-lose for the boys teams. Wonder what they would do if a "boys" team had a girl on it?

Yes, ridiculous at that age. If a girls team wants to play, then who cares? If they can handle it, great! Obviously you feel they can play with the boys. It's not gonna lead to an outbreak of girls teams wanting to play because coaches are not going to put girls in a boys league unless they feel they can compete. And if they do, it won't last long. There is nothing wrong with a good girl's team competing in a boy's league...really at any age level as long as the girls and parents know what they are getting in to. I've seem many competitive girls teams crossover in leagues to play better competition.

I thought the girls coach from Dixie was going to start a girls version of little colonels last year. Did that fall through?

$120 per player. I'd bring in 10 girls plus my u7 boys team. What league director wouldn't do that? I would guarantee that boone county pee wee football wouldn't turn down an entire team nor would nkb baseball. If a girls team can compete and the parents are ok with it, what does it hurt?

We are not a school team, not ready for aau ,too competitive for the YMCA and upward. We're just looking for a place to play besides sports of all sorts.

Are these boys team bad ? How could girls compete with boys the same age in basketball?

I could understand allowing one or two elite girls playing on a boys team. But an all girls team playing in a all boys league ? I know it may not be PC but not only doesn't it make sense I don't know how it makes the boys teams better .

I know we have posters who follow girls basketball and passionate about it but at any age level if these are competitive boys teams then if I were the league director I would say no as well.

I've actually had "all girls" team win a boys rec league on several occasions! Until about 6th grade, some girls team can stay competitive with boys. Not all...some. Now those same girls are playing for Holmes, Cooper, Ryle Etc.

Now, this is my younger daughter's team and they are still learning the game. As rcc9 mentioned, I obviously think they can compete or I wouldn't attempt to put them in the league.

I would think the majority of girls playing sports in high school, started playing that sport with or against boys when they were younger.

Different sports all together but after coaching boys baseball for somewhere around 20 years and then being thrust into girls fastpitch the last few, there are kids that could crossover and perform well in the other genders sport. I've coached or been involved with some pretty good hitters from the HHS baseball and fastpitch teams... Ramey and Mills, Graybill and Dutcher. As for the hitters, no doubt in my mind, Graybill and Dutcher could go yard on a baseball sized field hitting the baseball. Would they hit .500+, maybe not but wouldn't bet against .400. They might have to slow their timing down to adjust but good hitters can do that. Now that being said Todd and DJ would get theirs too as they are great hitters and would figure it out soon as well.

What I am getting at, is where is the lose-lose for the boys? If you get beat by a better player/team, you just got beat by a better player/team... Not by a bunch of girls... Let them play... And by the way... Give Coffey an extra 30 feet to field a ball and no doubt she would be at least even with Whitford...
