Watching the Cubs/Padres game....Rizzo swung through strike 3 but the pitch his him in the foot, gets away from the catcher, he goes to 1st, after Bud Black comes out and talks with the umpire, the other umpires get together and they call Rizzo out.

Is that the correct call? Swing through strike 3, get hit by the same pitch, ball gets by the catcher and you make it safely to first and your called out?

Correct.

Strike.

Ball is dead.

All runners return.

I didn't know. I had never seen that happen. I know that if you swing through strike 3 and it gets past the catcher you can run to first and make it safely.

Is that rule the same in high school? I was behind the plate last Thursday. Runner on 1st, no one out. Batter swings at strike 3, it hit him in the elbow, ball goes to the backstop and the runner goes to 2nd. I called dead ball, strike 3 and sent the runner back. My partner was the crew chief for the night and asked me if I had a foul ball or strike 3. When I said strike 3 he gave the runner 2nd. This is my first year back so I assumed I was mixing pro rules with high school so I didn't fuss. He's been a high school ump for 20 years so I just figured he was right.

You were correct. A runner cannot advance on a dead ball.

I KNEW it. I figured he knew better since he had more experience.

Runners stay at the base occupied at time of pitch.

And it didn't matter if it was strike 2 or 3, right? Dead ball when it hits the batter.

I've not been happy with my strike zone every night but I felt like I knew the rules. Glad I was correct in this situation.
