Conner 2 Bishop Brossart 0

Featured Replies

Nice pitchers duel and leather flashing out there by both teams. 1 or 2 key hits it could have went the other way. Nice game by both teams!!

Brossart shut out for the fourth straight game. Stepping up the competition late in the season in preparation for the postseason.

Sims does it all for her team.....HR, 3B, 1B....and then her shutout performance in the circle. Mustangs collect just three singles but had a chance in the sixth with bases loaded. A two-out hit on a couple occassions could have changed the game.

That she does, if you take her hits away, it would still be 0-0 in the top of the 15th lol

Tell me about the play where BB had runners on 1st and 2nd , groundball to SS and there was a collision with the runner going to third. Did I hear correctly that they did not call interference?

Finger on the pulse my man….

The two teams might have diff of opinion. Ball was hit back to pitcher who fielded it cleanly. Shortstop broke up middle...runner broke to third and they collided. Field ump called defense interference/obstruction and awarded runners next base. Heard conner bench and fans wanting call to go other way but didn't hear much argument from Conner coaches. I think the call was correct since the ball never made it to the SS nor really was not in her direction unless it got past/through the pitcher. Was call correct based on this vantage point (understanding that you weren't there to see it)?

I would say the ball was not hit to the SS...

Situations/plays like this always intrigues me. I've played 25+ years of baseball (high school and college) and had never seen this play happen that happened in the W-V game. But a batted ball hits the base runner. I had always thought the runner was automatically out when it hits them directly. But because the ball went past the firstbaseman and then hit the runner before the secondbaseman had a chance to make the play, then the runner is not out. Then it happens in the College Regionals yesterday and they talk about the play and the defense had a chance to make the play. So i had never seen that happen very often in baseball but b/c softball infielders play in closer then I suppose this thing happens more often.

But back to the interference/obstruction call in the Conner game...if the ball never makes it to the SS because the pitcher fields the ball...does the runner have the right of way in the basepath? And was the call made correctly on the field?

Or, another situation that it could have been if looking at it differently. Again, it was hit back to the pitcher with runners on 1b & 2b. If the SS was going to second to field the throw on a "force play", and she collides with the runner advancing to 3b....is it interference/obstruction on the runner or SS?

First situation: if I understand the "actual" of this play, the ball passed the pitcher and then the 1B fielder "tipped" the ball, the ball then hit the batter-runner. That is a live ball as both pitcher and fielder had an attempt to play the ball. No issue with runner being hit.

Situation # 2: likely obstruction since the fielder was not actually "making a play" on the ball. Runner should be protected to next base. Again, my opinion without seeing.

Just FYI on the WV incident: I initially heard of the situation prior to it being posted.

So, on the W-V incident, ball was no where near the pitcher. It was hit towards the firstbaseman with a runner on 1b. I do not recall if the 1b actually touched the ball, but it went by her glove (definitely could have made a play on the ball). But the secondbaseman was ready to make a play and field the ball when it hit the runner. But because the firstbaseman had a chance to field the ball, then it is a "live" ball and the correct call was made that the runner was not out. I just had never seen that play very often.

The Conner situation, the SS was definitely not making a play on the ball as it was a comebacker to the pitcher who fielded it cleanly. So it appears the correct call was made (totally realizing you were not there to see it play out). I'm sure if we'd have scored a couple runs after that then there'd be more attention on this...as it turns out no harm was done.

Past the pitcher is exactly that, past...regardless of ability to play the ball. Once the ball is touched by a fielder, other than the pitcher, ball is live with no penalty to batter-runner if hit. In this case, the 1B did touch the ball, the ball took a sharp angle away from the play and 2B's ability to play or not was a non-factor.
