As an attendee at one school, why would she expect to be able to play sports at another school? She can absolutely participate in youth leagues, AAU, and organizations developed by home-schooled parents. She just can't do these things at schools where she is not enrolled.Further, she can socialize with whomever she chooses. But, I don't think we should expect public schools to let her in the cafeteria during lunch to shoot the breeze with her friends. I don't see why athletics should be any different.

My best friend is a pharmacist, as is his wife, they home school their kids and his oldest daughter just got a 21 on the ACT in the 5th grade. She is excelling in school clearly, why shouldn't she be able to play sports and do social activities because she is schooled at home?

 

Because her parent's exercised their rights and opted to school their daughter at home because that is the better option for them and their daughter. I fully support their right to make that decision in the best interests of their daughter. But by making that choice they also opted out of the social aspects of sending their child to a school with others and among those social aspects are participation on the school's sports teams.

Why? They are still paying taxes that fund those schools? Why should chosing to educate their kids at home prevent them from access to extra curricular activities they are helping to fund anyway?

An outstanding football player who is also an outstanding student opts to go to a very good private high school that has no football team. Should he be allowed to play football at another school that does field a team? How about the same kid playing for another private school that does field a football team or a home schooled kid playing for a private school? I can hear the wailing and gnashing of teeth already if a kid like that decided to play football for Trinity or X.

We're not talking about private schools are we? I was under the impression that the only option was a public school. I was also under the impression that we were talking about only home schooled students and not private schools with no football team.

The proposed Florida law applies to home schooled kids as well as students in private and public schools.

 

Does it make a difference in your reasoning if they are included? The parents of kids in private schools pay the same school taxes as home schooling parents. Shouldn't they be allowed the same access to extracurricular activities they help fund if home schoolers are?

Definitely. The argument was being made that a kid could attend one private school and play sports at another if the original private school did not offer that sport. It was also said that a kid could be home schooled and play sports at a private school. I would strongly disagree with those two scenarios. As Long as the sport is being played at a public school, I have no problem with that.

So it's a public vs. private thing for you. Thought as much.

Not at all. And I can do without the condesending attitude. People pay taxes so they should have the right to participate in extra curricular activities if they chose to home school their kids. Private school is completely different. Now if they want to pay full tuition to send their kid to a private school for sports and still home school their kids, I'm fine with that. But I don't think home school kids should be able to play sports at a private school without paying full tuition.

Checkout their schedule below! This is basically going to be a traveling AAU type football team playing the best they can get on the schedule... The question is will they be able to get enough elite players to move down to Florida? And maybe they won't have to.... obviously Florida is stocked with talent, I'm definitely going to be following this program, just curious how it's all going to develop. Congrats Coach Wright!
