I come in to the room in this situation and I would think the last thing on my mind would be putting the gun back in the cabinet. Heck I probably wouldn't be thinking at all. Just my observation. I thought that sounded fishy as well. Your first priority is the child bleeding in front of you. If that were my child, I would not have left her side for anything!

I'm pretty sure the 5 yo is so traumatized at that point, he/she is not going to pick the weapon up again. Yes, get the weapon away from the child and secure it. Take the time to go lock it up again at that point in time? Nah.
April 2, 201511 yr The girl was laying in the hall right in front of the room with the gun case. I will bet you dollars to doughnuts the key was still in the lock, zero effort to secure it at that point. Too bad more effort wasn't taken with hiding the key in the first place. Reports do not mention hysteria - the boy was right there, getting his shoes on. With his age and possible exposure to the gaming culture, sadly, not sure your average 5yo gets the concept of consequences like death.
