Sweet Sixteen Preview: Boyle County Rebels

12th Region Champions Boyle County Rebels

The Boyle County Rebels are this year’s 12th Region Champions and will be making their first appearance in the Sweet Sixteen since 2006 after defeating district rival Lincoln County 48-46 in the 12th Region championship game. Coach Steve Adams is in his 7th season as the coach at Boyle County and this will be his first Sweet Sixteen appearance as head coach. The Rebels come into Rupp Arena with a 26-6 record and will face the 11th Region champions Lexington Catholic Knights Thursday afternoon at 1:30.

The Rebels are led by 12th Region Player of the Year senior Hagen Tyler who averages 21.5 ppg and 7.2 rpg. He is also the leading free throw shooter averaging 82.5% from the line. Senior point guard Jeremiah Bell adds 20.8 ppg/ 6.4 rpg and junior center Colton Elkins adds 7.2 ppg/ 7.1 rpg. These three players have been the foundation of this Boyle County team and will be vital in the success the Rebels hope to have in Lexington this week. Other contributors are senior Chapman Bean, senior Keagan Hinkle, and junior Josiah Robbins.

The Rebels started the season as one of the top teams in the 12th Region and made their way through a difficult schedule to emerge as 12th Region champions. The 12th Region was as strong as the region has been in recent history with, at times, four teams ranked in the top 25 teams in the state. With that being said, the Rebels posted a 15-2 record versus other 12th Region opponents with their only two losses coming at the hands of Lincoln County, once in the regular season and again in the 45th District finals. Even though the Rebels did beat the Patriots during the regular season, no victory was more beholden than the thrilling victory over Lincoln County in the 12th Region championship game.

Boyle County also had a challenging out of region schedule playing in the Knox Central Holiday Shootout and the Traditional Bank Holiday Classic. There they got to play against the likes of Trinity (Louisville) Covington Catholic, Bryan Station and other top quality opponents that help prepare the Rebels for the post season.

Boyle County had the opportunity to play their Sweet Sixteen opponent Lexington Catholic early in the season in the Traditional Bank Holiday Classic. The Knights were the better team that day beating Boyle County 65-47. Although Hagen Tyler was ill that day, he was still able to put up 16 points and grab 6 rebounds. But, the Rebels make no excuses and are looking forward to the rematch set to take place this coming Thursday. This match-up between the Boyle County Rebels and the Lexington Catholic Knights looks to be one of the best first round games in the tournament with the winner playing in the quarterfinals versus the 15th Region/ 7th Region winner. No bone about it, Boyle County wants to win this game not only to keep their season alive for another game, but to give Boyle County the first Sweet Sixteen win in school history.

2/27/15 Lincoln County 51-71 45th District Championship game

Boyle County’s Sweet Sixteen Appearances:

2006 Lost in the first round to PRP 43-67

1999 Lost in the first round to Muhlenberg North 43-47

1998 Lost in the first round to Fleming County 49-57

Very nice preview. I think the Boyle County / Lexington Catholic game has the potential to be the best first round games in the tournament.

Good read! Thanks. Agree that the 12th was deep this year. Good luck BoCo.
