March 9, 201511 yr I'm not opposed to force against the monsters, but there are serious limits to what we can do without institutions in place after the fact. Iraq's post-invasion government had a reasonable shot at success, but old religious divisions between Sunni and Shia and the collapse of Syria didn't allow that to happen, putting us where we are now. Are we going to use force because that's what's next or because we think we can get it right this time? I think we use force when we either don't know what else to do or our hand is forced.
March 9, 201511 yr I think we use force when we either don't know what else to do or our hand is forced. At least things are finally happening. Soldiers from the country on Nigeria's northern border (the name of which won't survive the word filter) who've been under training from U.S. special forces for the last few months, launched an operation this morning. Something in the neighborhood of 200 vehicles crossed the border into Nigeria. I saw it on the BBC this morning while I was sipping my coffee. I'll see if I can find an internet link.
March 9, 201511 yr Chad, Nameless Ally launch offensive to combat Boko Haram This was always the AU's fight if we wanted it to end properly. I'm happy to see the neighbors put a force together and that the AU has endorsed an 8,000-man force to bring the northeastern part of the country back under control.
