In a game that was marked by quite a few errors by both teams, CovCath came out on top by a score of 10-4. Dietz (sp?) pitched for Boone and deserved a better fate, as most of the runs scored by CovCath were unearned. Farrell pitched for CovCath and all but two (IMO) of Boone runs were earned as well.

 

We are into the mid way point of the season, and to me at least, I am seeing far too many errors, or lack of understanding from some players on how to play their positions. Example: outfielders not taking proper angles to cover fly balls, infielders not getting their gloves down to stop routine ground balls, infielders not properly setting up when throwing the ball to first, outfields and infielder not talking to one another as to whom should field the pop up, (I could go on and on), and I am not just talking about the CovCath players......

 

Seems to me, that other than the catchers (who I can honestly say I have seen quite a few who I am really impressed with) I have seen far to few baseball players, and more athletics who are playing the game. Many just don't seem to understand the game, but are good enough athletics to overcome their lack of fundamentals and or skills.... Maybe the idea of playing all these games without much practice should be revisited, as many of the teams I have seen play this year so far, need more practice, just on the fundamentals of the game.......

Just because CCH looks bad fundamentally doesnt mean they don't practice it. I know that is all there practices consist of, because Krumps knows it as well and he is not a very happy camper right now.

Cov Cath may make a few errors now and then, but like last nights game against Boone, Cov Cath executes very well. There is no question what they are supposed to do in most all situations. Boone's coach even told his team that the main difference in Cov Cath and Boone last night was playing a team that executes the game well. Boone is a relatively young team that can play with the better teams on a good day. But, they have not found the day in and day out execution that is needed when playing the better teams. If you make mistakes against a team like Cov Cath, you will lose. Boone's 5 errors to Cov Cath's 3 errors, shows that even with Cov Cath's errors they still know how to finish and get the job done. Boone had 9 hits and can only score 4 runs. The boys have to get it done up and down the lineup. Ferrel pitched a good game. Dietz did not have his best stuff last night. But the team did not support their pitchers Dietz/Morgan with 5 errors and only 4 runs.

 

Boone also lost SR-Rathert with a shoulder injury. This has been giving him problems, but a throw to home, took Rathert to the ground. He had surgery last year on this shoulder. He could be lost for the rest of the year. Another whole to fill. Solid second baseman and #2 hitter.

Krumpelbeck will hammer home fundamentals and defense over and over again from now until the end of the season. I'm sure the errors will diminish as time goes on.

Lots of errors in this one made this a very very long game. Almost 2 hours I think was the length. Of the first 7 runs for CCH, maybe 2 or 3 were earned. There were two fly pop up balls that Boone County simply could not gather.

 

On a side note, Maile from CCH had one of his best games of the year yesterday. Solid hitting and did well to catch Farrell as he was on the mound.

 

I was also impressed with the catcher from Boone blocking lots of bad pitches from going behind the plate. Is he a sophomore?

Sorry to hear about Rathert....hope its something that a little rest and anti-inflamatories can take care of.

The young man did a great job behind the plate and even a better job of hitting the ball. His double was a thing of beauty as he worked the pitcher from a 2 strike 0 ball count, to a full count, then hit the double, then the next time up with the third basebman playing deep on him, he lays down a beautiful bunt, and gets a easy single. He is going to have to learn to lay off the high fast balls that are in his eyes, but he is a frosh, and he will learn. He will be a great one, that is if he doesn't give up baseball for basketball.......

 

The Boone catcher also did a great job behind the plate. Quite a few NKy teams have some very good catchers on their teams.

Yes, Boone's catcher is a sophomore.
