Weight Meet at Raceland 2-28-15

Featured Replies

I was curious about JC myself, but spoke to an old friend that went. Only 8 were football players of the 14 JC took, and as one mentioned, some only competed in specific lifts and not all 3. The majority of the team is still wrestling, due to state being pushed back till next week, or were at baseball practice.

I know a lot of people enjoy these weight meets but to be honest in a lot of cases winning weight meets just doesn't translate to winning football games.

Speed training doesn't either, or 7 on 7's or any other one thing. But, you put them all together they sure help. If you have the strongest players, the fastest players and most prepared players I like your chances of winning some games.

7 on 7s are absolutely pointless. Four years ago, why would Russell come to a 7 on 7 tournament at Raceland? Every team needs to be a strong physical team. Every team needs speed. Every team needs dynamics. It's a versatile sport with various skills that are required. That's why it's the hardest and greatest sport on earth.

I think strength is important but mainly to keep from injury. Not selling it short but I just dont believe its a game changer. In the past Ive seen 2 Ironton linemen who were much weaker in the gym than 3 of Russells linemen come out on top. In the trenches 6'4" and 350lbs trumps over a stronger smaller lineman 75% of the time. Just my opinion.

If that smaller, stronger lineman takes advantage of technique, technique will beat strength any day.

That's what you've been told but its not true. That's why the NFL is full of linemen who are 6-4 and taller.

It's not sways true. I just making a point of reference. Strength aids. However, strength helps in most sports.

Funny, if you only knew the size of the person you're telling that to.

Not to me, it made me laugh out loud.

How many linemen have been told by college recruiters "you may be faster, stronger and quicker than the other recruits were looking at but we can make them faster and stronger....we can't make you 6'4"." Lol

If strength beats technique as much as you say it does, why do linemen practice hand placement, hands above eyes, and to have a balanced stance? Even NFL players will tell you that technique is more important than strength. They will also tell you that strength aids in their technique because with the added strength, they are able to bend their legs better, stay in a bent knee position longer and they are able to deliver a better blow among impact.

Strength, agility, and quickness are three of the four most important things to a quality linemen. The fourth is the most important-technique. You cannot have a quality linemen without technique. No "ifs", "ands", or "buts" about it. You can put Arnold Schwarzenegger in the trenches and he will get beat at least fifty percent of the time due to his lack of technique. I am using this metaphor because of his amount of strength, not because hes a good football player. The person across from him can get their hands on him quicker, off the ball quicker, and make a good move. That is all do to technique. Strength, agility, and quickness all aid to technique. You can improve your quickness, gain on lifts, and improve your agility. Wide outs use these as their main attributes. That's fine when you are running away from a defensive back. When you put a wide out in the trenches with those three qualities and no technique, you might as well hand the other team the ball. Technique is the MOST important attribute for a lineman.

What I am saying, you may not think strength means everything, and I agree with that. However, if it didn't win you games, why are programs lifting in the winter? It does win you games. It makes your muscles tired time and time again so when you are in the fourth quarter, you aren't tired as much because they are already trained to be tired. Technique is fundamental in the trenches, but strength, agility, and quickness are key to a lot of attributes for a linemen.

#1 Size is the foundation and you can't teach size.

#2 Technique and execution are vital, but you can teach it.

#3 We work strength in the off season because it is important and the easiest thing to teach/change.

Just because size is #1 doesn't mean you get to put no strength and or no technique to win an argument. We never said no strength and or no technique.

Last but not least just so we are clear a 5'11 250 lb lineman who has grade A technique and squats 500 pounds and has all kinds of heart is going to get stonewalled by a 6-4 325 lb tackle with C technique.

At each level that size becomes more important. In high school you can win championships with 5-11 linemen across the board but in college, no. Then the NFL super no.
