Holy Cross 58 Newport Central Catholic 51

Featured Replies

Game started out very slow for each team. Holy Cross started to go inside and would continue most of the night to Alley Mayhaus that Ncc did not have the size to content with. Ncc struggled to make shots early on and at the end of the first quarter the Indians lead 14 to 7. The second quarter saw better flow to the game and Ncc starting to hit shots and Holy Cross took a five point lead into the half.

The third quarter Ncc struggled to make any shot, and Holy Cross continued to go inside to Mayhaus and looked like they would put the game out of reach going up by 13, but Ncc turned up the pressure on defense and started to chip away at the lead. However, in the fourth quarter every time Ncc would cut it to single digits Holy Cross would be able to pound the ball inside for a score or hit an outside jumper to keep the lead at arms lenght.

Bottom line tonight Ncc missed way too many shots, some contested, many open. (Ended up 5 for 19 from 3 point land). Holy Cross made a living going inside to Mayhaus and Ncc simply did not have the size to keep her from hitting at point blank range. Both team played very hard, just basically came down to one team hitting shots and the other struggling to make them.

I saw NCC play earlier in the year and they seem to have few options for scoring and I noted that only five players scored in this game. I am curious if that is a season - long problem (finding additional scoring contributors) and will this limit their sucess in post-season? They have performed well late in the season and could be a sleeper if they find depth.

Covington Holy Cross 58, Newport Central Catholic 51:

NewCath (15-10) had no answer for Holy Cross senior Ally Mayhaus in the 9th Region loss. The 6-foot-1-inch post scored 24 points to lead the All “A” State champions (24-3).

Mayhaus had help as Deja Turner scored 17. Holy Cross has won 13 in a row.

Ansley Davenport and Michaela Ware led NewCath with 15 points each. Loren Zimmerman followed with nine.

NewCath travels to St. Henry on Thursday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Good game NCC is really coming along and Holy Cross has a lot of weapons and you will have to play very well to beat them. With that being said and by no means am I saying this decided the game but the referring was horrible, 2 out of the 3 refs had the All A game against these 2 teams. At one point Holy Cross coach got a warning in which the ref said one more and its a technical and he made it clear to the other 2 refs, then another ref game him a warning, correct me if I am wrong but shouldn't the second have been a technical? I will be the first to tell you I don't know all the rules but that I think should have been a technical.

Holy Cross will be tough to beat and the Turner girl is a very smart player she lets the game come to her and gets everyone involved.

Why is it always the refs fault. NCC has lost 10 games this year. Was every loss because of the refs. Put the ref uniform on and do some games.

If you read it correctly I never said it was the refs fault.
