coach2709 Posted April 11, 2006 Posted April 11, 2006 Game early got close in the end. Pikeville was leading 8-1 in the 5th when Griffin Hall was taken out the game. He had given up one hit and one run. John Mayo relieved for the next 2 innings giving up 3 runs. Will Ward started the 7th, struggled with control giving up 4 runs and Watson Ritchie ended the game. Hall looked good on the mound and the Panther bats are started to come around. Williamson pitched for Pike Central and did okay. His defense didn't help him. They didn't make many errors, but poor angles to balls in the outfield and positioning in the infield hurt the Hawks tonight.
KIDS FAN Posted April 11, 2006 Posted April 11, 2006 How long has it been since Pikeville has lost a game to a Pike Co. school?
Buck Master Posted April 11, 2006 Posted April 11, 2006 How long has it been since Pikeville has lost a game to a Pike Co. school? Pikeville has not lost a game to a Pike or Floyd County School since at least 2001, their only losses have been to the 57th district. I knew that in 03,04, and 05 their were none. I checked KHSAA and their were none in 2001 either. Pretty good run.

Buck Master Posted April 11, 2006 Posted April 11, 2006 How about Buck Masters's noggin? Buck's noggin is hollow. Find something a little more solid.
RNCSportsaholic Posted April 12, 2006 Posted April 12, 2006 \ I checked KHSAA and their were none in 2001 either. Pretty good run. You are talking about Pike Co loses, correct?
BaseballFan13 Posted April 13, 2006 Posted April 13, 2006 Come on now. HAHA...Just playing, FB...I know that noggin of yours is full of useless baseball knowledge!
MOUNTAINFOOTBALL Posted April 13, 2006 Posted April 13, 2006 Pikeville has not lost a game to a Pike or Floyd County School since at least 2001, their only losses have been to the 57th district. I knew that in 03,04, and 05 their were none. I checked KHSAA and their were none in 2001 either. Pretty good run. Sorry this post is so long but I have seen a lot of Pikeville baseball games over the years and have a lot of good memories about the teams of the late 90s. I bet that they lost some in 2000 to Pike and Floyd County Schools but the only time Pikeville lost to a Pike County or Floyd County team that I can remember from 1997-1999 was in the semifinals of the 97 region tourney to Betsy Layne at Shelby Valley and to Pike Central in the 99 district title game at Valley. Pikeville started 7 sophs 1 junior and 1 senior in 1997 I believe and Betsy Layne threw their ace at Pikeville and lost in the championship game to Elkhorn City...Betsy Layne was good in 1997(probably the best team in the 15th region) and may have beat Pikeville a few times that year. I can't remember Pikeville losing to a Pike or Floyd County school in 1998(they may have but I can't remember if they did) when Pikeville won their 4th region title in school history and the 1990s....Pikeville beat Johnson Central 2-1 at Pikeville in the 98 region title in the bottom of the 8th in a great championship game and one of the best high school baseball games I have ever seen....Johnson Central was probably the best team in the mountains that year besides Boyd County, who beat Pikeville 7-0 in the Section 4 title game at Pike Central...Boyd County was loaded that year. In 1999 Pikeville lost to Pike Central in the 59th district championship game but beat the Hawks the other three times that year including the 99 region title game when Pikeville took care of the Hawks in 5 innings 11-0 at Johnson Central...I would say that Pike Central may have had their best team in school history in 1999 and they had a true ace in John "Gump" Bevins who beat the Panthers for the district title I believe. Pikeville went on to beat Boyd County on their field in the sectional tournament before being beat by Middlesboro in the section 4 title game 12-3 in a game that Pikeville played their worst game of the year...the Jackets had a tough team though and a very athletic group of players that won the Class A football state title that year and thumped Pikeville's football team in the Region 4 championship game...Pikeville was the best team in Section 4 that year IMO, they beat 2 of the other top teams in the section on their homefield in Johnon Central in the 1st round of the region tournament and Boyd County in the opening game of the Section 4 tourney....I believe the Lions were ranked in the top 5 in the state in 98 and 99, 3rd actually if I remember correctly in 1999. Should have advanced to Lexington for the final 4, which no Pikeville team ever did but I believe the Panthers finished Section runner-up in 93,98, and 99....the 05 team (and really the 04 team also)was good enough to win a game or 2 in the section 4 tourney with a good draw a few breaks if that was still the setup for postseason play. The Panthers lost a lot after the 99 season, as 6 of the 7 seniors from the 99 team either played or signed to play college baseball and 2 seniors from the 98 team played college baseball including Josh Shofner, who pitched for 2 years at UK before giving up baseball to concentrate on academics...Shofner is now in his last semester of Medical School at Yale...at one time I believe there were 11 players from the 98 team that were either playing baseball at Pikeville College or Georgetown College in 01 and 02 and that didn't include the two best players from that team IMO because they wanted to concentrate on academics. Belfry had some good teams those years but I don't believe Pikeville and Belfry one single time from 1997-1999...Belfry wouldn't have beat Pikeville in 98 and 99 though if they had played and would have probably not have been a 7 inning game if Pikeville was having a good game. Another good run for those teams was that they were 6-0 against Shelby Valley in 98 and 99 and did not give up a run to Valley in all 6 games...I believe that the 05 and maybe the 04 teams did the same thing to Valley. Valley isn't and wasn't very good, but they had some pretty good talent in the late 90s and to go 6-0 with 6 shutouts against one of your cross-twon rivals is pretty good. Pikeville was rebuidling in 00 and 01 and that was the time for other teams to get their shots in on them. I kinda expected the same thing this season but it seems they still have enough talent and pitching left to win a lot of games and make another nice postseason run. I still look at the Panthers as a rebuilding team this year but with the 15th region down as a whole this year Pikeville is still the team to beat. Do you know where I could find a schedule with results for the 97, 98 and 99 Pikeville teams Buck? Coach Lawson and Pikeville have had a pretty impressive run since 1998 when Coach Lawson took over as head coach not only against Pike and Floyd County schools but against the whole 15th region. Coach Lawson may have the best team in the region again this year and will no doubt be in the mix for another region title, which would be his 5th 15 region title in the 9 years he has been head coach. Coach Lawson stepped into a good situation at Pikeville, as he had 2 talented and deep teams in his first 2 season as a head coach...I truly believe that those 2 years with Lawson winning region titles in his first 2 seasons as head coach were big for the future of Pikeville baseball and the Coach Lawson era at PHS. The Pikeville little league and senior league is a great feeder program for Pikeville, it is one of the best feeder programs in EKY IMO along with the the Paintsville feeder program for Johnson Central and Paintsville and is a HUGE reason Pikeville has built what is IMO the top high school baseball program in the 15th region and one of the top high school baseball programs east of Lexington, the Johnson County schools are up around the top also. Lawson didn't have the top team in the region in 98 and 02 IMO but still one the region title...I think Johnson Central had the most talent in 98 and Paintsville in 02. However I think Pikeville had the best team in 2004 but didn't win the region title. Overall though Coach Lawson is the perfect coach for the job at Pikeville. He has respect from the players and support from the school admistration and community.and The kids in Pikeville grow up now wanting and expecting to win the region titles in both football and baseball now and Coach Lawson is going to win a lot of games at Pikeville and with him being as young as he is he has a chance to be one of the all-time great coaches in the 15th region and EKY. Coach Lawson all ready has 204 wins at Pikeville in 8 years, which averages out to right over 25 wins per year, and he is only 30 wins behind Dave Thomas as all-time wins as a head coach at PHS. Johnson Central and Paintsville have 2 of the best baseball programs in the mountains and they are going to win their share of region titles but Coach Lawson and Pikeville have as many region titles as the rest of the region since he has been coach and I expect the success they have tasted to continue to be the norm most seasons. The following is from Pikevillesports.com ...In his 8 seasons as a head coach, the Panthers have complied a record of 204-84 while capturing five 59th district titles (1998, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005) and four 15th region titles (1998, 1999, 2002, 2005). The 1999, 2004, and 2005 Panther teams all won 30 games a feat which has only been accomplished at Pikeville 5 times. During tournament play since 1998, the Panthers are an impressive 32-10 including a 15-3 record in the regional tournament. The Panthers have also captured the first 4 "All A" 15th regional championships and played in the state tournament at Applebee's Park in Lexington.
Buck Master Posted April 13, 2006 Posted April 13, 2006 Game, the KHSAA only goes back to 2001 so I dont know where to find information on the 98-99 teams. I think the two best teams in school history were 1999 and 2005. I would bet all the school records are from those two teams. The 98 and 99 teams are the ones I credit for building the huge interest their is in baseball at the school. I followed these two teams and it was my first experience with PHS baseball. The 04 and 05 teams just continued to build on those teams successes. We have probably 150-250 people attending our games now and their not all parents of current players. Lawson has done a tremendous job and puts a quality product on the field. I have seen most teams this year and expect him to be right in the thick of it during tourney time. Go Panthers.
Buck Master Posted April 13, 2006 Posted April 13, 2006 You are talking about Pike Co loses, correct? RNC if you will look at an earlier post they have not lost to a Pike or Floyd team in that time, however the 57th has posted all the losses in the region to the Pikeville teams. The 57th and Pikeville kind of own the region right now and I dont see that changing anytime soon. Belfry however does have a solid young team right now, so that may change.
TrueBlueSV Posted April 13, 2006 Posted April 13, 2006 How long has it been since Pikeville has lost a game to a Pike Co. school? Shelby Valley beat Pikeville twice in 2000 and again in 2001
