What else is there to do in Finland besides finnish homework and study?

State mandate only 30 minutes of homework allowed. Can't start until they are 7. No state over-site and no national testing. Very Montessori-like first nine years.

 

When they turn 16 they move to an advanced academic track or vocational track. From ages 7-16 there is no ability grouping allowed.

 

Many European countries do the latter two things, but most not as successfully.

 

Not putting more funding and value on technical, vocational education when students reach 16 is where the US has dropped the ball significantly. It's better than 10 years ago, but not close to where it needs to be.

I would be curious on their economy and worker situation. I have no problem with starting school at 7. But what are the kids doing until then? Are the majority in learning enriched day care centers with funding supplemented by the Gov? Or is the economy such that the majority of families are one income so the kids are cared for by a parent until age 7?

They are all in state supported day care until 7 in their neighborhood. There are no tuition schools at all. All meals are provided to all students.
