Newport Central Catholic 57 Ryle 46

Featured Replies

Before this one started and not knowing ANYTHING about the Lady Raiders, I would have said Ryle by a bunch......simply for the fact that they had a HUGE height advantage over the Breds. Also, NewCath was without So. starter Meg Martin who is recovering from Mono and Sr. MiKayla Seibert who is still not healed up from a soccer injury. However, that was not the case as the Breds forced the Raiders into 27 turnovers in route to the 57-46 victory up on the "hill".

NewCath started the game on a 7-0 run and maintained a 20-12 1st quarter advantage. Forcing Ryle into 8 tunrovers with their full court press. Sr. Hannah Daunt was "raining" down triples from long range. However the Lady Raiders regrouped in the 2nd stanza and held the Breds to only 3 free throws, the 1st 2 not coming until the 3:03 mark, and taking a 26-23 lead into the locker room at the break.

In the 3rd frame, a combination of NewCath pressure, FT's shooting, and triples from Daunt, SR. Sarah Neace, and Fr. Lexi Breen propelled the Breds to a 20-12 quarter to take a 43-38 lead into the 4th.

The final stanza didn't start well for the Raiders, as NewCath forced 6 turnovers in the 1st 1:30 of the quarter. However NewCath could only add 2 points to their lead. In the end The Lady Raiders just couldn't climb back into this one as the Breds cruise to the victory.

Don't have any point totals, but solid all-around effort by the Breds tonight. Besides Breen, Neace, & Daunt connecting from long range, Sr. Michaela Ware continues to impress on both ends of the floor in all facets of the game. Sr. Loren Zimmerman with another "blue collar" effort. Jr. Ansley Davenport, smooth as silk........does she ever get rattled? So. Olivia Schalk with a nice job bringing the ball up the floor when Ware was on the bench, and a great job on defense.

Was really impressed with the play of Ryle 8th grade point guard Juliet McGregor, really nice handles and drive to the rack. To me she was the only Ryle player that could bring the ball up the floor under pressure. Plays above her age.....at least in this game. Have ZERO idea why she didn't see more time on the floor.

And not because I talked with their dad before the game (he's an old softball bud from back in the day), but really liked the games of 8th grader Lauren Schwartz & Jr. Mallory Schwartz. :thumb: The talent must come from mom. :lol2:

Can someone in the Raider camp tell me why they don't utilize their "bigs" more, especially with the height they've got?

Some of the coaching moves for Ryle left me scratching my head. :idunno:

Forgot to mention, NewCath takes all three games tonight. I believe the NewCath Frosh and JV are both undefeated.

Lawn boy .. You will earn the keys to Union if you can find an answer to your question.. Lots of head scratching going on. Congrats to NCC on a nice win.

In my opinion one union school hit the coaching jack pot and one didnt.

Better look at the Mason County Cooper score before jumping to that conclusion. I do have to admit though, Ryle has some capable ball handlers that don't seem to get a lot of time. Playing the three bigs together does not seem to be working. I don't know what they are thinking either.

Lexi Held last I checked had broken fingers and from what I understand the Anderson girl is suffering from a concussion leaving only Asyah Mitchell healthy in a sense (because she takes a licking and keeps on ticking) to bring the ball up! They are young and growing and turnovers will plague them till they get stronger... Nothing wrong with the coaching at Cooper just a lack of experience, height and depth!!

Got the text of the score this morning. Does not change my opinion.

Winning in Catholic School environment with established athletic traditions and kids who are extremely well supported is one thing. Doing the same in a public, closed enrollment environment is a bit more of a challenge. Jury is still out for me.

Good points.

I don't have a dog in the fight. I've been to a couple Ryle games. There's no need to sugar coat it. The coaching (or lack of) is just VERY bad. They have some good players. They should be playing much better. I know a lot of people didn't like the former coach, but she did much better.

Private schools do have the advantage of the players being well supported, but it is not like Cooper has an enrollment of 100 girls like a Dayton, Bellevue, or Ludlow. I am surprised that Cooper, who probably has between 400 to 500 girls, doesn't have more girls interested in playing basketball. I am not sure if there is lack of interest, girls playing other sports, or the grade school/ middle school programs not being supportive enough to develop players. Cooper has a very talented team, but I was surprised at the core of the team is mostly freshman and sophmores.

I really like the way NCC is playing right now. Love the pressure defense and the way they push the pace of the game. They are playinhg very good team ball. I think the emergence of Davenport as a consistent scorer has been a big plus. All the players seem to be fitting into and excelling at their roles. They are going to be a tuff out for a lot of teams if they keep up this level of play.

My understanding is that there is tremendous competition for female athletes between basketball and volleyball. The two sports have such rigorous calendars that there is almost no sharing of athletes between the two sports. If Cooper has a strong VB program, that could explain the low turnout for BB.

NCC gets after it on defense. There press is outstanding.
