I think you could sum the Ncc effort up in one word. Scrappy. The Breds constant defensive pressure caused several turnovers, and hit enough shots from beyond the arc to maintain the lead throughout the 2nd half. The Half time score was 32 to 20 Ncc. Dixie made a push in the third period to cut it to 37 to 30, but too much pressure and quickness, the Colonels couldn't come any closer.

 

Tibbs had 18 points for the Colonels, but ending up fouling out with 2 minutes left to go in the game.

NCC defense looked like a swarm of bees around a jar of honey.

Newport Central Catholic’s girls basketball team won its third game of the season in as many times Wednesday.

The Thoroughbreds pulled away from the host Dixie Heights Lady Colonels (3-1), 51-36 for another 9th Region win. NewCath led 32-20 at halftime and pulled away in the fourth quarter.

Freshman Lexi Breen scored 14 points to lead NewCath. Michaela Ware, Loren Zimmerman and Sarah Neace followed with nine points each. Neace made three three-pointers.

The difference in the game was turnovers. NewCath’s patented on-ball pressure defense that forced 25 turnovers.

“That was big,” said George Stoll, NewCath Head Coach. “Our press was working pretty well. We played hard and got after it. It was a good win.”

Dixie Heights saw Liza Tibbs score 18 points.

NewCath made 9-of-18 free throws for 50 percent. Dixie Heights hit 4-of-7 for 57 percent.

The Thoroughbreds travel to Breathitt County on Saturday. Game time is 4 p.m.

These girls are conditioned to play at this pace considering the starting 5, Martin, Ware, Schalk, Davenport, & Zimmerman have all been varsity starters on the soccer team since they were freshman. You can also add Seibert and Tolle to that list, they will not get tired.
