"An interesting turn of events came with 23:02 left in the game. One player from each team tangled near the line and NewCath drew a foul and the game’s lone yellow card."

This sums up the game really. The center ref, badly behind the play, makes the worst call imaginable. NCC player wins a sprint for the ball up the sideline, takes position in front of HHS player. HHS player makes effort to go through NCC player pushing him out of bounds and to the ground. Ball goes out of bounds also. Center Ref calls foul on NCC player setting up the free kick equalizer goal. Give the assist to Center Ref. His calls were very interesting all night. Kept the fans on the edge of their seats wondering what he was going to come up with. Unfortunately another case of POOR officiating adversely affecting the outcome of the game. The yellow card was on an uninvolved NCC player for voicing his displeasure.

The NCC player landed on the ball in bounds and it ended up in his hands. I think it would have been a no-call/throw-in if the ball had ended up out of bounds, but it didn't so that option wasn't available. I certainly could see it being called a foul against Highlands, but it wasn't (called a foul).

NCC scored its goal on free kick following a foul given by Highlands... the Highlands player thought it was shoulder-to-shoulder, but the ref thought his arm came up. You can argue it should have been a no-call, but a foul was called.

Darn officials... they ruin every game.

The games I have seen this year have been pretty poorly officiated, the inconsistent calls and bot being able to keep up with the play is a bit sad. There are some young officials ( Ricky Barea) anda few others that do an outstanding job.

The officials that make no attempt to keep up with the play should hang it up. There are too many. (1 is too many). ARs too. Hard to say a ball has crossed the endline when you're 5-10 yards from it.

I believe there is a shortage of officials this year, if that's the case it will never get better. Need to start worrying about the play of players and stop worrying what people say to them. Take a lesson from Euro officials, never ever do the talk to a coach or player that complains about calls. Maybe if they were in position they would make the correct call

Sad to say the least.

"Curious Call" to say the least. Likely a foul on the HHS player trailing the run at that point. He trips the NCC player who lands with the ball in his hands and he calls "handling"????

The only time the center ref sprinted all night was to chase a player and chastise him for a comment made. Maybe he should put that much effort into getting in position to make the correct call.

It's the ARs responsibility to stay even with the second-to-last defender, until the ball passes that defender. If that player is 10 yards from the endline when a ball is passed thru, and crosses the endline .. you're right, it's hard to tell, especially if it's played with a lot of velocity. But the AR was in the correct position.

Actually a well played game by both teams. It's obvious that there is mutual respect among the players from both teams and it shows on the field. No "chippyness" whatsoever and players from opposing teams helping others of the turf. Both teams play very strong defense but need to show more offensive aggressiveness to increase scoring.

Not in the specific case I was thinking about, but yes they could be in the right position.

Except it's not the right position. The correct position for an AR is with the 2nd last defender or ball whichever is closest to the goal line. That said it is often pointless to run to the goal line on an obviously booted goal kick.

They would probably have more young refs if they didn't think they would be crucified for not being perfect in their first year.

Both goal on free kicks sounds pretty even to me.

It's not about being even, it's about calling the game correctly. The "being even" thing is what leads to the perception of "make-up" calls. You also see the game being called blatantly differently when the score or talent level is lopsided. I see officials making calls to benefit the weaker team to give them a break or holding the stronger team to a higher level. Make the "correct" call and don't worry about "even".

Ok.....since this is turning into a refs discussion....here is my tw cents after my second Woodford and coke in the Memphis airport.....

Along with being in the correct position, another pet peave are the refs who feel they need to talk to the players all game. Let them play. More times than I can count, I have seen refs talking all game t players so the players feel they can talk to the ref and when they do....yellow....

Play the game......ref the game......let me do the talking from the stands.
