Nice win NCC! Woodford County was ranked #7 in Maher rankings. First win this year by a NKY team over a Maher Top Ten ranked opponent? Hopefully the way CCH, Scott and Cooper are playing there will be more local chances (I only said chances) for NKY teams to beat a local Top Ten team in the next couple of weeks.

...I'm saying those three teams hopefully are knocking on the door to break the top ten,,,

No offense but those Maher rankings are taken way too seriously in my opinion. I believe Ballard was #5 when they were beaten by Scott so that would have been the first win by a N. Ky. team over a top 10 in the rankings. They have fallen down since then however. At the end of the season they may have more validity but right now, given that there is so much emphasis put on where teams finished last year, I don't take them too seriously. For example:

 

South Oldham 5-3 record (ranked 4th)

St. X 2-3-1 record (ranked 6th)

Henderson County 3-2-2 record (ranked 8th)

 

These are all before this weeks games.

St. Henry 5-3 record (ranked 40th)

 

Lexington Catholic 4-5 record (ranked 32nd)

 

While their schedule strength is better than St. Henry, they have a losing record and lost head to head to St. Henry by 2-0. Among common opponents, St. Henry lost 1-0 to Trinity but LexCath lost 4-0. All of that but ranked 8 spots higher? LexCath did keep it closer vs CCH than St. Henry did but still......doesn't add up.

I have also scratched my head over the Maher Rankings, seems to work itself out as the season goes along but I think where you finished last year is weighted too heavily in the calculation. It seems that it is hard for a team to climb in the polls, and teams that do not start well do not seem to drop at a comparable rate (see Greenwood results).

 

I will say that it still makes for some interesting discussions and at least gives us something to use in comparing teams across the state.

There is a huge difference in playing at home or away, for example

Turf or grass

Length and width of the pitch .

Sun sets to one side .

If you bring a good student section, (Cov Cath)

Your own music to warm up to

How far you travel

Just some factors in home and away games

All of that is true but you assume that your home field benefits you in all of those ways. I'd say travel is the only home/away that may be a factor and that's if it's going to Louisville or Lexington from here. One N. Ky. team playing another at their field I just don't seeing it being much of a factor. For example, CCH has what I think is a relatively narrow field and I think it hurts more often than helps them with their style of play. I just don't think it's that much harder to win on the road vs. at home in a high school soccer game. I have not seen it be a factor yet this year.

So width and length are not factors? Have you ever played at Cooper?

I am not saying it's a huge factor but I do believe it can help or hurt you. Was at the Cov Cath New Cath game and CC had a great fan base that I believe can get into players heads. Does that same group travel to away games?

They were at the HHS game....

 

 

With that said.....the CCH fan base is awesome.... They support home and away, in typical CCH Crazies fashion.......Most of the time they are led by students who were once part of the team, but aren't anymore......hats off to them.......
