Not sure. J Israel is not playing this year. I look for his brother to take over that starting role again this year.

Prep Basketball: Cardinals ready to return to winning ways

George Rogers Clark High School boys basketball coach Scott Humphrey noticed a difference in his team’s competitiveness last season and hopes the Cardinals can turn those close games into wins this season.

“Looking back on it, a couple of years ago, we were really just overmatched,” Humphrey said. “We played a demanding schedule, we were young and teams were clearly, to be honest, better than us. I thought last year, even though our record didn’t show any improvement, we were competitive and put ourselves in position to win several nights. I thought we basically competed in every game we were in and had a chance to win.”

The Cardinals finished 9-20 last season and have compiled an 18-41 mark during the past two years. Clark edged Paris 57-53 in the opening round of the 40th District Tournament and gave 10th Region runner-up Montgomery County all it could handle in the finale, before dropping a 62-61 setback to the Indians.

The core of Clark’s team returns this season and Humphrey is banking on the team’s close calls to serve as a learning experience.

“There’s no excuses,” he said. “It’s time for us to get back on that winning track that Clark County is known for.”
