"Judge Huvelle sentenced Malone to 100 months in jail. And as Malone, 45, winked to the gallery before being sent off, he left friends, family and the basketball world to figure out whether he was an AAU coach moonlighting as a drug dealer or a drug dealer masquerading as an AAU coach."

"He controlled so much talent that coaches recruited his players, hired his coaches and overlooked his past indiscretions. Three of 10 recruited scholarship players on the Duke roster in 2010–11 were from D.C. Assault. “I think everyone was shocked,” says Blue Devils coach Mike Krzyzewski of Malone’s drug-dealing career. “How would you know that? I feel bad for the family. He’s been a great father to Nolan.”

Was Huggs the head coach when Beasley committed?

"Before meeting Malone, Johnson wasn’t even eligible to compete in high school basketball for academic reasons; Malone not only helped him study but also guided him through four schools in five years, using Johnson’s case as a blueprint for his future mentees. He became so close to the players -- traveling with them, giving them gear and even taking them in -- that they didn’t mind if he tried to make money off them. Malone did not coddle them; he sent Johnson for his final year of high school to Maine Central Institute in a rural part of the state against Johnson’s wishes. Malone steered Johnson to Cincinnati to play for Huggins, then encouraged him to declare for the NBA draft after his freshman year. Johnson signed with agent Dan Fegan before the 2000 draft because, he told Sports Illustrated, “it was [Malone’s] decision.”

Johnson told SI that his relationship with Malone happened organically, and that it was not exploitative. He considers Malone family. Malone discovered him, gave him a basketball platform, sheltered him and fed him. “Regardless if he made money off agents or Adidas or anyone else,” Johnson says, “I know what he did for me.”

Yes. Beasley wanted out of his LOI after signing when Huggs left but K-State wouldn't let him out of it.

The above excerpts are reasons why I don't have a problem with high schools being allowed to give benefits.

There will always be people willing and, because of the AAU culture and it's influence in the game today, able to give benefits to kids. High school teams are more regulated than AAU organizations. There are more background checks. There are more heads that will roll and people who'll lose jobs in associated positions if there are findings of things that were swept under the rug which shouldn't have been there. People with crack convictions won't be coaching high school teams, nor will they be in their ranks.

DC Assault had some guys that could play years ago.

No he didn't. Beasley was going wherever former DC Assault coach Delonte Hill was on staff, which is why he initially committed to Charlotte when Hill was on the staff of Bobby Lutz. Huggs hiring Hill at KState to get Beasley ruined a decades long friendship between Huggs and Lutz...

He wanted guarantees and concessions were made. There was definitely some posturing and uncertainty.

Like you said, as long as Hill remained on the staff, it was good.

You said he wanted out of his LOI. That never happened. There were no guarantees or concessions other than keep Hill on staff and all is well...

Ironically after 3 DUIs in 5 years Hill is now out of coaching and working to take over what is now known as DC Premier in the wake of the Malone mess causing them to change the name of the program. If he does take over, I'd expect the DC Assault name to return...

"Rest easy, Kansas State fans. Fatima Smith finally is.

Smith said Saturday her son, Michael Beasley, would honor the national letter of intent he signed with K-State in November. Beasley is the nation's No. 1 recruit according to Rivals.com.

"The drama is over," Smith said by phone, excitement clearly audible in her voice. "Yes, Michael will be there (at K-State) for the next school year."

The drama at K-State was thick in recent days, and it took a toll on Smith.

Bob Huggins resigned Thursday to become coach at West Virginia, his alma mater. Fans and even athletic department officials mourned. Everyone wondered what K-State would do and how Huggins' departure would affect the No. 1-ranked recruiting class he signed in November."

That doesn't sound like it was a slam dunk.

There's this too.

He only "drama" was if Hill stayed on staff. That's it. Trust me on this one...

Most definitely. That's what I was trying to say too. Pretty hard to go back on the kind of commitment they'd both made. Poor wording on my part.
