Steve Wojciechowski named Marquette Head Coach

Featured Replies

Their former coach took a $500,000 pay cut and moved to Blacksburg, Virginia and no current head coach wanted the job. Marquette probably needs to take some time and take a good, hard look at itself in the mirror. The entire NBE probably needs to do the same.

This isn't a NBE issue, this is a Marquette issue. Keep in mind they have essentially been rudderless with no President and no permanent AD for the better part of the school year, and now the announcement that admission requirements are going to be going way up and held to strict enforcement.

Your point about Marquette needs to take a look at itself in the mirror is spot-on, they are going to rue the day they deviated so dramatically from what had been working. Their fan base in Milwaukee is actually quite small (compared to a Xavier fan base, as a percentage of adults in a major market that root for a team), although not small like in the SLU level in Saint Louis. Marquette plays in an NBA arena, and if / when support starts to waffle, that could look very bad in a building of that size.

The Chaif (Chaifetz) is beautiful, it is nearly a perfect replica of Cintas Center, and it is the right size for them (about 10k). However, to underscore the point of the size of their fan-base, in the building's 1st ever SLU MBB game, they drew about 7,500. Of course, at the time, they also had an AD (Chris May) and a head MBB coach (Majerus) who couldn't stand each other. The support has been good for the Billies during this solid two-year run, but I'd bet you a doughnut that when they go back to normal (next year) they'll average in that 7,000 range, which, while not bad, isn't great.

Mizzou and the Blues just swallow them up in their own town.

But better than having 7000 in a 20,000 seat arena

If either of us cared enough to actually do a P&L for both programs, one that took on something in the vicinity of $50,000,000 in debt to build an on-campus facility but gets every revenue stream, and one that has to pay rent to an NBA team, doesn't get near the sponsorship opportunities, nor the concessions or parking....I'd say that may not be correct.

I don't care enough.
