Schools that have won regional in 1st year?

Featured Replies

This was brought up in the 1st region final thread.

Muhlenberg did it

McCracken

Anybody else?

For starters: Hodgenville won the 6th region in 1958...and its successor, LaRue County (made up of Hodgenville, Magnolia & Buffalo) won in 1959.

Same region, Caverna (consolidation of Horse Cave and Cave City) won in 1951.

Lincoln County won the 12th in 1975...as a first year consolidation of Stanford, McKinney, Hustonville, Waynesburg Memorial, and Crab Orchard.

Laurel County won the same region in 1971...the first consolidated year of London, Hazel Green, Bush and Lily.

In the 15th, Pike County Central (a consolidation of Johns Creek and Mullins) almost did in 1994...getting to the region final before coming up short.

Logan County was in its second year. Went 26-6 in 1983; won it all in '84 with a 37-3 mark.

Knott Central in its first year in 1975.

Yes, technically. "Knott County" had existed for several years. The addition of Hindman and Carr Creek made it "Knott County Central" in '75.

And Hindman and Carr Creek werent added to the old Knott County high to make it KCC. It was a brand new school consolidated from those 3. The old Knott County HS was in Pippa Passes across from Alice Lloyd College. The brand new KCC was in Hindman.

Old Knott County High, which consolidated with Carr Creek and Hindman in 1975, is a totally different school from Knott County Central. Different name, different building, different address, different mascot and logo. It has no more connection with KCC than does Carr Creek or Hindman.

If I'm not mistaken Knott Central won the region the first year they were in existence and the next two years as well. Herbie Stamper, who went on to star at Morehead State, was their main gun in 1975. Their school enrollment was around 800 to 900 when they first consolidated but they're now down to around 620.

I did not know all the differences between Knott County and KCC. 'Preciate the info.

I certainly remember the name Herbie Stamper!

And you're right Professor, the new Knott did have quite a run: region champs in '75 and '78; region runners-up in '76 and '77. Then champs again in '81 and '82.

KCC has had a good run but can't measure up to the success of Carr Creek.

It's my alma mater so I know my stuff. :) Amazing how small KCC has gotten. Had over 1000 kids my time there.
