District 8 Dominance of Region 2

Featured Replies

Last night Hopkinsville won the 13th consecutive regional title for district 8 in the 2nd region. Quite a remarkable feat considering the strength of the schools along the Pennyrile Parkway. From Madisonville, to henderson along with other schools with strong basketball traditions the 8th District comprised of schools exclusively from Christian county now OWNS the second region. Between Hoptown, Christian County and UHA, each school has won multiple regional titles in the time period. 3 schools in a county wiht 90,000 people has now completly taken over the region.

Considering the size of Henderson county High school this makes the feat even more remarkable.

Congrats Hoptown, UHA and Christian County for quite a remarkable accomplishment.

Has any other region ever seen this type of dominance from one district where 3 schools have won multiple titles in a timeframe?

And I believe I also saw that Henderson County has lost nine consecutive regional finals since last winning it in 1999. Hard to believe one district can be so dominant and one program can be so snake-bitten.

The 14th District has won 13 consecutive titles in the 4th Region now as well. In that time, Warren Central has 9, Bowling Green has 3, and Greenwood has 1. In addition to that, the region final has had two 14th District teams in it 8 times in that span.

Expanding that, the 14th District has won 24 of the last 29 4th Region titles and 34 of the last 44. There have been 18 all-14th District finals since 1971.

In my opinion, that's to be expected in the 4th. What other significantly sized towns are there in the region compared to bowling green? I would expect the BG district to own the BG area region whereas I would actually expect Henderson County and their massive enrollment to dominate region 2. Nope. It's District 8 and it's multiple teams from district 8. As it was said by an ESPN commentator about a month ago when commentating a LSU game, "Hopkinsville Kentucky is one of the great basketball cities in America"

I know we in the west can't even come close to hang with the big cities of lville and lex in football so we have to have at least one decent sport in a town from the west haha. i personally think Louisville is one of the better football cities in the country.

My dream would be that more big d-1 prospects come out of the state for basketball! To much talent here in the state that's overlooked.

Both Logan County and Barren County have higher enrollments than any Bowling Green school, and Allen County-Scottsville, Franklin-Simpson, and Russell County all maintain comparable enrollments, albeit less than the 5A schools at the top (BG & Greenwood). You have to remember that while our county is much larger, we divide into a lot more schools, all of pretty even size (5 now). But I agree, it's expected. I was just answering your question as to if any other areas have enjoyed that type of dominance.

It's still remarkable. Pretty interesting.

It wasn't always that way in the 2nd Region.

From 1944-1967, at least one Hopkins County school (District 7) was in the championship game all but twice in those 24 years...winning 17 of them.

That's old history, and it's not quite the same as winning 13 straight, but it was quite a streak.

Winners during that time frame included:

(6) Dawson Springs

(4) Madisonville

(4) Earlington...including the state championship in 1967

(2) South Hopkins

(1) Madisonville Rosenwald

It should be noted that this streak was before integration.

And also before consolidation in most counties. Large county schools like Henderson County and Christian County, even Madisonville-North Hopkins either didn't exist or had just been started near the end of the streak.

Henderson County would have been the earliest...opening in the fall of 1954.

Christian County opened five years later.

Madisonville was a "city" school...adding Anton in 1950-51 and Hanson in 1962-63.

Hopkinsville was considered a football school. Tigers only went to state once (1969) before winning it all in 1985.

Yep. Hoptown got the football players and county got the basketball players. Seems things have shifted.

here is a stat. Hopkinsville is on a 50+ win streak in region 2! They haven't lost a region 2 game in 3 years. Haworth is 111-17 at hoptown which puts him over .800.
