2014 53rd District Tournament Preview

The 54th District Tournament has been a three team race past couple of seasons between Knott County Central, Cordia and Letcher County Central, with both Knott County Central and Cordia advancing to the regional tournament. Knott County Central, however is the top dawg in this district.

1. Knott County Central:

The Patriots are the top team in this district. Over the past four years, the Patriots are a combined 34-1 against district opponents. During that span, the 53rd district title has called Knott County Central home. This year should be no different. Heck, next year, might not be any different.

2. Cordia:

Coach Rhodes and his Cordia Lions have came on strong past couple of seasons. The Lions have gave the Patriots fits, only losing 66-60 in last year’s district championship game. The Patriots may when by double digits in the regular season but one thing’s for sure is that the district championship game will go down to the wire.

3. Letcher County Central:

The Cougars are itching to get back to the 14th regional tournament, a place they haven’t been since the 2011/12 season, where they fell to Powell County in the first round. The Cougars have had a thorn in the side of them, a thorn named Cordia, these two usually meet in the first round of the matchup with Cordia getting the best of the Cougars.

4. June Buchanan:

The Crusaders haven’t been to the regional tournament since the 2009/10 season. They usually meet Jenkins in the play-in game in the 53rd district tournament then falling to the Patriots in the first round of the 53rd district tournament. The Crusaders are hoping that this is the year that they can get past Jenkins and upset the Knott County Central Patriots.

5. Jenkins:

Jenkins is hoping that this is their season to get past June Buchanan and get a dance with the king of the 14th region, Knott County Central and like everyone else, they are hoping they have what it takes to upset the Patriots and make their way to the 14th regional tournament.

Players to watch:

Camron Justice and Evan Hall of Knott County Central are two players to watch. Camron Justice averages 26 points per game for the Patriots and Evan Hall is averaging a double-double per game for Knott County Central. Both should have big games in the district tournament.

Christen Cunningham, Fritz Lucien, Anthony Tagaloa, this is just a taste of the players that Cordia has that plays really good and as a team. If this team comes together at the moment, their just might be a new 53rd district champion this year.

Chippy Frazier and Josh Owens are the two main horses that make the Letcher County Central Cougars go around.

The Pairings:

February 24th…6:00 PM…(4) June Buchanan vs. (5) Jenkins ….Play-in game

February 25th…7:30 PM…(2) Cordia vs. (3) Letcher County Central

February 26th….6:00 PM..(4) JBS/(5) Jenkins at (1) Knott County Central

March 1st….7:00 PM….Championship

My Predictions:

June Buchanan over Jenkins

Letcher County Central over Cordia

Knott county Central over June Buchanan

Knott County Central over Letcher County Central

I'm feeling LCC over Cordia as well.
