Is Jim McKee a TEA Party supporter? Group forces vote on tax increase for 2nd school

Featured Replies

Scott County is currently the largest high school in all of Kentucky with 2,374 students according to the official count. With over 1,200 boys this puts Scott County on par numerically with the Louisville Catholic schools. Scott County, in its current form, has the numbers to be a power and compete with the Super District. Last years 7 point loss to Trinity, at Trinity, proved that Scott County was ready for the long awaited break through. The State Championship for 6A is less than 24 hours away and McKee's Cardinals are the favorites.

But Scott County is overcrowded with all the growth of recent years a second high school is needed to deal with the situation. The Scott County board of education has been raising property tax rates at their maximum allowed without the opportunity for a recall but it is not enough to fund the second school. So this year the board voted for a higher rate increase - and one that could be put to a vote if enough people signed a petition.

It appears that a group has obtained the required number of signatures to for the increase onto the ballot next year. This effort was not without some harsh words from Scott County School Board member Haley Conway. Conway indicated the recall vote was driven by some "hardcore TEA Party people."

When, and it is when - not if, Scott County gets a second high school it will certainly reduce the numerical equivalency it now enjoys with the traditional Louisville powers when it comes to football. The recall vote has probably delayed Scott County building another school for at least a year. A new school is still some time away.

Does Jim McKee keep a Gadsden flag in the back of his closet? Probably not. But for now, the actions of a local anti-tax group may allow him some extra time to keep competing for a State title. Tomorrow night may be the break through McKee has long awaited and worked for. And until Scott County splits it should be a year in and year out contender under McKee's leadership for the 6A title.

Coach McKee actually spoke out about his feelings on a second high school at a public forum about a month ago. Basically he said that Scott County could field two very competitive schools but with the current lack of athletic facilities, he encouraged the board to take that need into consideration if they moved forward with the new school.

Currently SC plays home games at Georgetown College. Practice facilities are very limited compared to the number of teams needing practice space. The baseball and softball teams play on fields owned by Scott Co parks and Rec. As does Tennis. Lacrosse and soccer play on middle school fields.

The emphasis on athletics in Scott Co isn't really what a lot of outsiders make it out to be.

IMO, McKee wouldn't mind being a 5A School with 600 boys. He just knows the need for a lot of bodies in order to be successful in 6A.

Interesting, when one considers that the Georgetown College track team practices at Scott County.
