Philip Haywood, high school football coach in the small town of Belfry in Pike County, Ky., has no idea how he managed to earn more votes in an online poll last week than any other coach in the country.

“I guess it’s one of these snowball kind of things,” said Haywood, for whom 653,111 votes were cast in USA Today High School Sports’ “Best High School Football Coach” regional competition after he had advanced from a group of eight state coaches in the first round.

Voting in the national competition started Monday and continues until noon Tuesday. The winner from the eight coaches on the national ballot will receive $2,000 for his school’s athletic department, plus a banner and plenty of exposure.

“I’ll see people on the street and they’ll say, ‘Hey, Coach, I voted for you,’ or give their congratulations,” Haywood said. “I’m kind of thinking, ‘About what?’ We’re trying to get the team prepared to play a game Friday night and play well.
