St. Xavier Insider- Week 7

The tigers dropped their 7th game in a row vs the shamrocks this past Friday by a score of 29-17. The game was very competitive until the 4th quarter when the rocks took a firm command of the game. With a score of 20-17 the rocks converted a 4th and 4 inside the tiger 20 to seal the game. Great performance by the star players in both uniforms. Bonnafon had over 200 yards passing and 2tds, brooks had over 100 yards rushing with 3tds and Davis had 99 yards rushing with a rushing td. Walker didn't suit up for the tigers but, he's practicing this week with hopes of playing.

Upcoming Game

The bulldogs of Male travel to St. X on Friday in hopes of taking one step closer to grabbing the division lead. The bulldogs boast an unblemished 6-0 record heading into district play. The bulldogs know if there is ever a year to knock off X and T, this is it. With that in mind, a focused senior class and a group of sensational sophomores will come into this game firing on all cylinders. The Male defense is led by twin seniors, Mike and Malik Malone. They're both hearing from bcs programs from around the country so they'll have this defense ready to make plays.

Offense

The offense has been singing the same tune all season: good running game, struggling passing game, and failure to convert on third downs and in the red zone. Houk was 1-2 in one series of play and nagle was 6-19 for the game with one touchdown and two ints. It must be stated that Nagle played his best game of the season and made excellent plays inside of the pocket. If Nagle is going to remain the starter he must use this performance as a confidence booster and run with it. If Houk is going to take over, he must learn from Nagle's mistakes and stay focused on the goal. Only one member of the three headed monster was present in this game, thus the final rushing tally. The tigers usually avg north of 215 yards on the ground, but not this game. Davis led the rushing attack in place of Walker, with 17 carries for 99 yards and 1td.

Defense

Just like the offense, the defense is singing the same tune. The defense couldn't get off the field on third nor fourth downs. The defense gave up over 300 yards of offense, 200 in the air and 100+ on the ground. They continue to struggle with mobile qbs and their coverage assignments. Though they won't face an extremely mobile qb this week, they'll be tested on the ground by Cain and Northington. I see an improved pass rush and run defense this week with Broyles likely playing.

Special Teams

Due to the inclement weather, neither squad's special teams unit was on fire. The tigers missed a 34 yard field goal on the second drive of the game which would've resulted in a 3-0 X lead. After missing that first fg, Collins notched a 35 yard field goal and 2 extra points. I look for the special teams to be on point this week. Dekota jones also provided a spark on kickoff return with a 50 yard return.

Charles Walker is out this week. This type of injury could limit his success the rest of the season. Games vs Manual and a desperate Cincy St. Xavier squad could be brutal. If the Bulldogs win, the Tigers and Shamrocks rematch would be bumped up a week. Best of luck to the Senior on getting back on the field.

Good thing is that it has been looked at by every known means to medicine (X-Ray, Doppler, MRI and Ultrasound) and no bone bruise or permanent damage.

Bad thing is that it is deep and requires PT and rest. This is a minimum of a 2 week deal, and you are correct, can sometimes take 3-4.

Expectations are high that he will be back next Friday, but we shall have to wait and see.

I wouldn't mind seeing him sit the rest of the season. I would like him to return in the playoffs. The only think that bothers me is this hurts his numbers. If he doesn't play the rest of the season, this will be his first season with out a 1000 yards.
