I've been there for bankruptcy court a few times when we lived down there. I don't know that I would call it the toilet. You can see the decline in farming there and Clarksdale for sure though. I'm sure both of those towns were beautiful in the 40's and 50's before a lot of the buildings were boarded up.

 

It's very rough there these days. The majority of family left in the mid 90's. They all say in the 60's-80's it was a great place to live. I still go back from time to time. A lot of history in the Delta if you're into It. Especially on the music side. My wife being from KY was amazed at the cotton fields. I pulled over and made her go pick some :lol2: I remember field trips in elementary school going to cotton farms and picking cotton. Most of my family moved to west, TN, Kociusko and Ocean Springs.

Why would it change your perspective?

 

Because I think someone who isn't forced to go, but just shows up to raise hell anyway has some deep seated feelings of hate and/or their own issues they haven't dealt with.

 

Being forced to go for a class can lead to a feelings of having someone's agenda forced onto you, and as a teenager, may make you feel rebellious by being rude for the sake of being rude because you don't want to be there.

 

Why are they surprised about things like teenagers who are forced to go to the play for a class playing on their phones, etc.? I'm in law school and see other students on their phone occasionally. I saw it even more in undergrad. People use them in class, what do they expect when making them go to a play they don't want to see.

 

Yelling epithets and things like that are one thing, but expecting different behavior from the things like being disinterested, playing on their phones, laughing, talking, etc. to me considering that they were basically forced to go falls into a different category.

I'll put it this way, I wouldn't be surprised to see something like this happen at a major Kentucky University if you forced a group of freshman who've only been in college a couple months to go when they didn't want to and the "mob mentality" started taking over.

 

That doesn't make it right, or excuse what went down, but let's be realistic and say this wouldn't necessarily be something that would have caused us to fall out of our seats if we read about it happening in our own backyard.

Being "forced" to go to a performance be it a play or musical performance is pretty standard practice for all insert art form appreciation class. These classes are also commonly taken as freshman or sophomores because they are part of the school's general education requirements.

I know, and understand that. I went to some as a college freshman myself. I was also disinterested in lots of them and played on my phone, talked with friends, etc., just as many other freshmen did, and I went to UK.

 

I'm not condoning the more despicable allegations at all, just being honest about what it was like when I was a college freshman.

Also I used the word "forced" because usually there are a number of options in these situations. In this case, the students had to attend 3 plays in the semester. There were a total of 3 offerings.
