The George Rogers Clark girls golf team didn't win a team trophy during the 8th Region girls golf tournament at the Winchester Country Club this afternoon, but the Lady Cardinals played well enough to qualify three individuals to next week's state tournament.

Katie Franklin, Caroline Browning and Taylor Humphrey joined Pendleton County's Ariel Ramsey as the region's four qualifiers to the state event. Franklin led Clark with an 88, followed by Browning with an 89. Humphrey edged Pendleton County's McKenzie Moore in a one-hole playoff to earn a ticket to Bowling Green. Humphrey birdied No. 1, while Moore shot a bogey after her approach shot fell short of the green. Both players finished the round with a 91.

Congrats to all individuals and teams who qualified for the state tourney.

Little known factoid. Since realignment, Scott County and Mason County have been the Region 8 teams to go to state each of the last 6 years.

Taylor Humphrey held on to the lucky buckeye in her pocket as she approached the first playoff hole during the girls 8th Region Golf Tournament Tuesday at the Winchester Country Club.

Humphrey made it look easy with a birdie on No. 1 to beat out Pendleton County’s Makenzie Moore as the region’s final individual entry to next week’s state tournament.

Humphrey, daughter of George Rogers Clark boys basketball coach Scott Humphrey, carded a 91, followed by Hannah Ritchie with a 92 and Taylor Ritchie with a 96. Taylor Ritchie, who advanced to the state tournament as an individual with an 88 last year, recovered from a 56 showing on the first nine holes and punched in a 40 in her final prep outing.

The region appearance was the first for Franklin, daughter of former Morehead State golfer Scott Franklin, who produced her lowest score on the Lady Cards’ home course.

Mackenzie Moore will be the 4th qualifier, not Ariel Ramsey.
